It's cattail roots.

I see 'em often. Beavers dig 'em up and use 'em to help dam. You'll see 'em in rivers and other tributaries after a flood.

Are you sure it is? Those images are of a smaller plant. It says they are in Florida.

I just went down to the pond a pulled up a cattail...does not look the same...

Just before I left work someone mentioned they think it is Lily pad root. Thats some crazy ugly root if it is.
