the response is to show your boss all of your hours and tell him that they least they can do is give you 8 hours off when you are sitting on 1000 hours of overtime per year.
If he still wants to be an ***, ask him for time off or pay for those overtime hours.
Not that you'll get it but at least he/she might understand just how much extra you are putting in.

Well, seeing as how I am an ****-retentive engineer...I do keep tract of all hours I work...for my own benefit/depression...And they (management) know that I put in a lot of additional time and they know that this place would not be able to operate in its current status without my additional efforts....so, I do think that I will have "bargining rights" when it comes to having this discussion...and I am confident that some sort of comprimise would be reached...I just felt like venting along with 3valve since I am in a similar situation

Well I haven't kept up with my hours until now because I haven't been shafted this hard. I've kept my mouth shut about my hours until now. I worked my **** off to bring the old company into a new territory that they had never worked. (Bootheel of Missouri) We bought tons of rice there, and it paved the way for the new company to slide right in there and buy lots more. Now they shipped me off to comute 50 miles a day and not get to work the area that I helped build. They put a lady (Kim) there who buys the ***** out of rice while I'm trying to get a firm base somewhere else. They always come in and say "What have you done today, Kim bought a bunch of rice?" And I'm down here trying to make it go and it just doesn't work as good here.

Ask for a direct, one-on-one meeting with the big boss. Tell your direct boss what you are up to if you think he has your back. At least have the big boss talk to you on the phone. You made a huge deal - if he won't talk with you, that's a bad sign.
Try to sort it out with the big boss face to face. Remain calm. Tell him you made a huge deal which made him look good and earned him lots of money, while on your day off. Tell him you feel insulted that the company wants to dock your pay. Ask him if you can expect more of this kind of treatment while working for him. Within 10 minutes of his time, you will know if you have a future with this company.

But the big boss also owns the company. I don't know if he has time for little stuff like my 1 day of vacation. I could be made to look stupid awful easily.

Sure, the big boss has lots of things he would rather do than discuss one day of your compensation.
But if he owns the company, he probably made thousands of dollars for what you did on your 'day off'. You have the potential to make him many thousands of dollars in the future. If you leave the company, he will spend a lot of his time interviewing and training a replacement.
If you are a valued employee and he has any sense, he will at the MINIMUM see you do not get docked the day's pay. Personally, if I were him, I would aplogize that my underlings were too strict enforcing policy, make sure you got paid for that day, and cross my fingers that you did not quit or ask for a raise.
Of course, maybe the big boss wants you gone. Or maybe the company is struggling and he has to nickel and dime everyone, including valued employees. Either way, that would be nice to know sooner rather than later, so you can do what's best for your future.

Well see that's the thing. I don't know if I am or not. Everybody just goes around in a kind of "blah" attitude and no congrats or F you or nothing. So I dunno...I guess a good talk with him could tell the story. And...yes I was out of vacation days...but am I not supposed to be compensated for those couple of hours when I was getting on everybody's nerves trying to work on my day of "vacation"?

I've had superb engineers under me that I thought were the sharpest in the industry- that I fought tooth & nail to keep; yet when they went on about their business- we felt their loss for a day, maybe two days- then things picked up... There'a always someone ready to step up and keep the ball rolling...
It's cruel to say this, and worse to have to face it. But having been a level 5 employee; who was still "reorganized" tells me that your work, and the hours you spend doing it, means nothing to the decision makers... You are employee number 23456. No more, and no less important than employee 12345; not to the bean-counters anyway....

You need to either feel valued or unvalued (the latter is obviously better). I know that at least in my case, I have worked my way into a position that it would be a disadvantage to them if I were to leave...yes, they would get by if I did...but it just would not be a positive experience for them for awhile until they got the tasks that I do daily under control... Am I gonna leave...doubt it, I love what I do and honestly...I could have not hand picked a better job being fresh out of college....do I feel that they take advantage of my enthusiasm of working here...yes, sometimes I do. I do get "pats on the back" for my accomplishments, and I am sure I would get "fingers shaken in my directions" for my short-commings...but we all need congrats and criticism if we are to grow professionally...
