I think its a sweet idea and will be just the right thing. Do not! I repeat Do Not buy a dog from a pet store, you will be paying top dollar for a dog with a lifetime of problems and worth about .50. A reputable breeder would only charge about $500. and still they are alot of work to keep them looking cute. Mary

When I read the first post in the thread, my immediate reaction was "This guy is at the top of the 'friends' ladder, and he's hoping for a future jump to the other ladder."

That's a high risk strategy. Almost never works. IMO, while you are providing emotional support and friendship to her, you are missing opportunities to find a woman who really loves you as more than a friend.

My advice is give her a token birthday gift and card. Stop spending so much time and energy on her, and put more effort into finding another girl to write letters to and spend your money on.
