1969,

I here this and that about the drive time and you didn't have any problems driving such a short distance back and forth to work?

Anything else you can tell us to help make that final decision. Idling, warm up time, glow plugs, manuals to get etc..

Thanks

I'm not sure where you live, but here's some more of my opinion.

I live in Colorado. We have 2-10 days a year over 100, and 1-3 weeks under 0. The PStroke I had started in any temp until it hit about 160K miles. Then I needed to put it on a block heater. I changed out the glow plugs at 170K for the second time, and got stupid by putting in a cheap set of Autolite Glow Plugs instead of the Bosch's. After that, it was very hard starting below 40. Another thing is if you are in a cold climate, it does take the PStoke about 15 minutes to get warm air in the cab, and if your window frosts over, it can really be a pain. I garaged mine most of the winter, so I didn't have too much of a problem with it.

I'm not wealthy, but I am blessed enough to not worry too much about spending a little extra on conveniences. Since that truck was going to be hauling a heavy trailer for it's first couple of years, the decision was made on the Diesel. When I switched careers and started driving it just 5 miles a day to work, I decided that I would just keep the diesel and see how it handled the short mileage. However, the owner's manual does state that the PStroke is not designed for frequent short mileage trips. In reality, short trips are hard on any motor, but the gassers are better suited for it. Anyway, from 138K to 196K, it was used for short trips to work and back, and once a month runs to Denver (170 miles one way). It was flawless. When I traded it, I was still getting 18.5 MPG highway at 80MPH, and it was still a very strong motor. Passing people up hill was NEVER a problem, and I did alot of mountain driving in it in it's early days.

Anyway, I have to be honest here. At the time I traded it, the price of fuel and the price of gas were within 5 cents of each other, with fuel still cheaper. I went to the Ford lot, got the estimated mileage numbers off a window sticker, and crunched the cost of upkeep of each truck. (Of course, I've found out since that the F150 does NOT get 18 highway). However, when I added oil, filter, and fuel costs with the estimated costs for the same things in a gasser, the gasser was seriously about $10 cheaper over 3000 miles. The gasser would probably be much cheaper overall right now. My PStroke was a Scab, and my 11 year old 5'6" daughter was running out of room on long trips. So I wanted a SuperCrew, and I LOVE the looks of the new F150s, so I tried one. I Love my newer truck, but will go back to a PowerStroke next time.

A little more honesty here. I have known some people with the 6.0 PStroke who are not impressed. The 6.0s seem to have an O-ring problem on the injectors. While I would chance it, I know that they wished they would have bought a used 7.3 instead. I would also say this. If you can stand your F 150 a few more years, it's rumor'd that two new versions will be out in the next 3 years. A 6.4 v8 for the heavy duty's, and a 4.7 v6 for the F150s. I'm sold on the latter if it happens.

My honest opinion is if you can afford it, the PStroke is the bomb, but it will cost you more than the v10 over the life of the truck. It's also a question of which of these two phrases do you hate to hear yourself say more.

1.) "Gee, I wish this truck had more power." (Says the v10 owner.)
2.) "Man, I wish the price of diesel would go down." (Says the PStroker)

Thanks 69'
You answered every question I was just getting ready to ask you.

My only real concern with my current truck pulling 10K lbs 6-8 times a year, is the rear end. It has more than enough Power and Torque to pull it. It was a blink of a thought to just buy a a 250 or 350 single rim rear end and springs from the salvage yard and slap under the 150 with a bigger tranny cooler. I mean it's only 10K lbs 6-8 times per year and less than 300 miles round trip each time. So thats only 2400 miles out of the 20K miles a year that I ussually drive. That comes to exactly 12% of the time pulling IF I go the full 150 miles away each trip. Our usual camp site is actually less than 50 miles. So I'm looking at less than 3% of my time towing a load. The rest is 7 miles to work and 7 miles back.

Sorry I was just doing a little thinking out loud on the key board there.
I think I'll stick with the 5.4L in an SD for the gas mileage vs performance vs my use & needs.

Can I just say how much you guys rock. I love all the advice you give.

We ended up buying an '06 F250 6.0PS Amarillo. Yellow is not his first choice of colors but it has the interior we like. We don't like the imitation wood grain of the Lariat. But a plus for me because yellow was what I wanted but it wasn't offered for my truck.

So anyhoo, thanks again you guys. You rock! I just took some pics so I will have to post them to my pic page.

Sounds sweet.. I agree with the Lariat thing. I like a little more rugged, utilitarian, yet clean look myself too. I'm not sure about the yellow... I'll have to see it... But as long as he like it then that's all that matters anyway. I sold some property and its should close mid next month... Keep me updated on what he thinks about the PS. I doubt that I go that route BUT.... You never know!

Where did you find an Amarillo edition? We dont have any on our lot, but we do have a LOT of '06 F250 Crew Cab 4x4 diesels, which will be my next truck, unless I can get an F150 with a diesel when me current lease on the Lariat is up. I think a Lariat style truck (F150) with a diesel motor (more than likely the 4.5L Power Stroke V6 diesel come 2007) would be perfect for me.

While other people seem to be lusting after you on various threads here and there, let me just say that I will now have a thing for your new truck. I love that Amarillo package! That's the bomb of bombs!

Nuff said.

I'm not 100% certain as I was just signing my name away, but I believe we got it for around $47,000 out the door. I work for Intel and get the Xplan so that helps. I want to say MSRP was $50,800 and we got it for $42,000 or something. I dunno.....

Yea, I love the Amarillo package except that it says "Amarillo" ever-flippin-where on the truck. I love the yellow and I love the interior but the stickers have got to go. Plus we need to swap out the door handles. They match the yellow and I don't like that look.

The one thing I don't understand is that there are no vents for the back seat. We got the SuperCrew so the backseat area is huge and there are no damn vents back there. There's plenty of room on the center console too, so why are they not there? My F150 SCrew has them, why not the 250??? UGH!!!

How do I post pics on this damn site? I thought I had a photo gallery but when I tried downloading pics last night I didn't have one :-(

I will get pics on here soon but it may be a week. I will try to get some tonight. By the time we got home last night it was dark so the pics didn't turn out so good. I will see if I can get some pics tonight.

Should just creat a gallery then it will ask you to upload pic. Browse your hard drive and open them then hit upload. To post pics. (It's a good thing Ihave these instructions saved.)

It's easy once you've done it. It sounds like a lot to do but after you have done one you will see it isn't that hard.
  1. Find image on the web that you want to post. (ie your gallery)
  2. Once found Right click on Image & click on properties
  3. Highlight the url that is givien in the picture properties
  4. right click and hit copy (or Ctrl+c on your key board)
  5. Go to the reply to post page and click on IMG at the top
  6. right click and hit paste (or Ctrl+v on your key board) to place the url in the IMG window that poped up
  7. click submit reply

    optional
  8. if you want to include a message with the picture you posted type the message either before or after either of the 2 [IMG] that appear on each side of the url that you pasted. Where ever you type your message that is where it will appear on your post. (ie. before or after the image or [IMG] symbols.) Note: when you place IMG it automatically goes underneath any message you have already typed.
