Big jump in Gas Prices!

I was on my way to work this morning and gas was sitting around 2.02 to 2.08 a gallon. By lunch it had jumped up to 2.17 to 2.19 per gallon.
Now I am not really complaining as it really does no good but that's a pretty big jump in one day. Kind of makes me wonder if it due to the London bombings, the upcoming hurricane or maybe a combination of things. I just hope they drop back down before I need to fill up again.

Anybody else notice a significant increase like that today?

Gary

I did notice that. I travel about a half hour in the morning to work and back home it was, just as you said, $2.03. Then the stations around work were $2.16 where they were $2.03 yesterday. I guess the stations at home haven't received the memo.

But I really don't have any insight as to why.

Shell raised gasprices with 2 eurocents a litre yesterday.
That's about 9 cents a gallon.
Nothing to do with London, crude oil prices for August went up to $61.50 or so.
OPEC said there is more demand then they can supply.

90 $6.31/US Gallon
93 $6.56/US Gallon

I filled up yesterday at $2.09. I noticed at lunch today that the same station is now charging $2.19.

When I drove past the gas station I normally fill up at this morning on the way to work, it was $2.02/gallon. On the way home this evening, it went to $2.17.

Gas jumped from $2.00 to $2.09 in about a day here. They will probably use the excuse that they had to shut down oil rigs in the Gulf because of hurricanes.

I don't get the whole "to much demand for supply" thing. If that were true wouldn't the stations be running out of gas like in the 70's? We seem to have plenty to go around, just the price keeps going up.

The thing that gets me is that they are trading oil futures right now, i.e. gas prices for AUGUST. Why is this? Who on Earth can predict what will be the state of things NEXT month? I mean hell, this month could see hurricanes that wipe out shipping and supply lines for refineries. I've always thought it humorous that the almighty brokers think they can predict the future of oil.

On another note, why is it that these oil FUTURES raise our prices the day they happen. I would be willing to bet my life's savings that if some magic source of oil appeared tomorrow and crude went for $10/bbl, our gas prices would take months to drop to meet that newly cheap price.

Lastly, my granddaddy used to be an oil man in the Gulf of Mexico. He'd go out to start new wells for various companies. Thing is, he said they'd shut them off when the crude was cheap, and open them up when the crude was expensive. We've got loads of crude in the Gulf, but we choose to buy a lot of our oil from the Middle East. I'd love to run off of our own supplies for like 6 months to let those in the desert see that we can get along decently without them.

We suck their supplies dry first and tell them to get screwed...
