That's because they DON'T have one. Cordless blows.

I forgot to say that even better than my V1 is my RCI 2950 multi-band Amateur/CB radio. It's one 'hael' of a radio.

Okay well since Cordless seems to be out of the question according to everyone. What would be a good one with a decent price range? After driving to the beach every day this weekend, I really need to get one. Especially after today seeing 8 cops on the way there and they all had someone pulled over. I guess I'll just have to get creative how I wire it up.

As a side note, be aware that our F 1-Fiddies are like giant magnets for radar. If you are in a group of 5 cars, the radar will pick out your truck.
Down the road from my house the cops have the 'courtesy radar' set up in the road. It displays your speed as you approach and flashes if you are going too fast. In my Ranger, it won't pick me up until i'm right on top of it. If there is a car behind me it picks up that car instead of me. But in my F 1-Fiddy, it picks me out of a croud even if there are 2-3 other cars between me and the radar.
I believe this tendancy is why I was unlucky enough to pick up two speeding tickets in the first 3 weeks I owned this truck.

Here is an idea... SLOW DOWN. It will definitely save you from getting tickets. You won't have to worry about which detector is the best or even where/how to mount it. Not to mention that your gas mileage will more than likely increase.

Any questions?

Irhogfan... Any questions?

Sure. How long does it take to get from Dallas to Chicago?

Hint: 13 hours flat.

Hey Thumper,

This thread is getting beaten to death but here's my final recommendation. Even though they're pretty expensive I really recommend getting the top of the line of the brand of your choice. Even at $330+ a pop, it'll save your butt and $$ in the end. 2 tickets (or even 1 depending on what you were doing) will pay for the detector right there.

Talking

i have used the passport and the valentine one. the v1 is the bomb imo. it works great. and yes it picks them up if they are radaring. it saved me many a times. and even over hills. now if they are triggering ti then you are on your own. most likely it will set off the radar detector before when he is triggering other cars. if they are parked facing the direction of traffic and are hitting the cars from behind it might not pick it up on a good signal but will usually hit a small note on it. of course there are going to be times when they outsmart the detectors. but for the most part you will be good to go since they are sitting on the side in one spot getting people.

Thumpster, the latest Passport model seems to be getting lots of good reviews, um, 8500 I think it is? A friend of a friend has one in his Navigator, works great. That's what I'll be getting eventually. The V1 is cool 'cause as newer updates are available for it, they'll update it for free, you just gotta pay shipping to them. It looks like a big ol' brick, and I've never used one, but they seem to be pretty good too.

Is this the one your talking about Quintin?

Passport 8500

Suprisingly Crutchfield has one of the lowest prices, only off by a few pennies.

Edit: Thank god for Ebay.

Yeap, that be it. I dunno why they want to charge like $40 extra for one with a blue display though.

Edited to add: Looking at Crutchfield, the Cobra XRS9700 is what I got, bought it at Radio Shack. It's not great, but it works alright. Little sensitive towards false signals even in city mode though.

Thumper - did you ever pick up a detector and if so which one? how is it working for you?

I got tagged today going 61 in a 45 zone. This was my first time taking this "HIWAY". It was 6 lanes so I thought the limit was around 65. Anyhow, I saw the motorcyle sherriff about 30-50 yards away... tapped on my breaks but it was too late. I looked around and thought maybe he got someone else...no luck... i was the only car in sight. He handed me the ticket and said "Nice Truck". I said thank you and left.

who would've thought... no traffic on the hiway in so cal rush hour. If anyone lives in So Cal, watch the Hiway 19(Rosemead) between the 10 and the 60. I guess they have speed traps there.

I believe in this instance, the radar would have saved my ar$e. And if you can avoid 1 ticket, it pretty much pays for itself... im probably looking at a $200-$300 fine + traffic school.

I don't normally speed and have been labeled as a grandma driver... I just didn't realize what the speed limit was and these trucks...once they get moving, they sure sail pretty quick.
