War of the Worlds
Saw it last night...dear God I want my $8 and 2 hrs back. The effects were great, but there was absolutely no plot at all. The original is much better (and as usual the book can not be beaten). This movie really highlights how bad of an actor Cruise really is.
I read this thread and expected to be dissappointed when I saw it tonight.
I agree with Blonde Ambition :o (and I'm not just sucking up).
I only agree with her and no one else.
(Sorry Guys)

I didn't know Forbidden Planet was a cheesy movie LOL. It was the very first sci-fi movie I ever saw as a little kid, in french mind you. Very good movie for its time I thought. That and King Kong in black and white heh.
I thought Tom Cruise movies were for chicks? Whenever I see his name I automatically think chick flick.

How was he to know what it was? It could have been ****, acid, or anthrax laden. he handled it well in my opinion. He didn't press charges; and, he didn't go jamswayne on the guy. The man's a little weird religeously; but, he's not a major jerk. When you compare him to his peers, he come's out pretty damned well.

The original has put me to sleep every time I've tried to watch it. I still haven't seen the whole thing. It's only famous for the radio stunt H. G. Wells pulled that fooled so many people into believing that there was an invasion from space. Now that was cool! I'll catch it on DVD at home.

Well, I just saw it, and I loved it. I don't consider myself brain-dead or part of the video-game crowd (Unless Mortal Kombet is involved). But, the movie- for what it was- was pretty good.
Having had no expectations set for the movie (Because I hadn't seen the original, nor having know that Independence Day was a spin on the original)- I enjoyed it. By the time they got to the farm-house, I realized this was almost the same movie as ID4.
However, Speilberg is a master when it comes to shooting. Who would have thought to add that snippet of the bodies floating in the river? Can you even imagine seeing some "S" like that? Not to mention the Anaconda tentacles searching the house for them; falling asleep then waking up the way they did... The only director I know that can "out-eerie" Speilberg is M. Knight Shalaman.
The tri-pods were awesome. I thought one was bad, but after seeing a formation of them move across Boston or whereever they were- was impressive.
All in all, I still think Independence Day was a better movie, from an "Oh-*****" standpoint. Freaky storms delivering drivers is one thing... Waking up with a saucer that's 15 miles wide over your city, is quite another..

Good review. Since you liked it, I might as well check it out.

While no one who actually played in this movie shoudl wait on any Academy Award nominations- I'm sure the movie will win some for special effects and sound editing....
I don't know about you guys, but I don't go to action movies expecting to see character development- and deeply written dialogue. That tends to make an action movie boring... That kind of stuff is for Drama's...
The only action movie in recent years that I can remember- that did delve that deeply was the Matrix in 1999 along with "Pitch Black" in the same year. The former of the two caused me to fall asleep in after Trinity killed those cops because the next 45 minutes were drool and snore-inducingly boring... Then it got good.
If you aren't expecting "As Good as it Gets" or "Good Will Hunting" levels of acting & charater development, you will not be displeased at this movie... It's no different in that aspect, from any other sci-fi action movie occuring on Earth, in the fact that there will be explosions, and cataclysmic destruction.

I was not happy with it....it was very predicable and seemed like 2hrs of the same special effect....I would wait till it came out on DVD and rent it Jamz...spend your money on Wedding Crashers instead if you feel like going to the movies...
