I think it was MotorTrend ( or one of them ) that was on Spike TV last weekend with the mid size shoot out.
The Dakota finished 2 to last, just ahead of the GM. Toy and Nissan were 2/3, and they rated the Honda at the top ( fit, finish, cargo room in the bed, interior space and 0-60 with a bit of off road were the only test points, no tow testing ).
They really beat up on the fit finish of the Dodge and the GM
GM was noted to be lacking in fit and finish, and the pass compartment was un comfortable were some of the drive notes by the 5 test staff.
Mind you this is the mag that seems to be bought off every year, by the mfgr with the largest advertising bugdet with them, but just to hear them rake on Dodge and GM was not pretty ( guess they are not advertising at all with them
).

My friend has one of those, but a Laramie edition with a Magnum V8 in it...that thing hauls *** for a little/midsized truck. I haven't noticed that with his doors, then again I don't pay that much attention to his truck, although the look of it has grown on me...but only because it's the Laramie and has the big ole' wheels and all that. The one thing that really bugs me about his truck, it doesn't have "oh crap" handles in the rear seat, so you have literally NOTHING to hold on to.
I like the 4.7 in the Grand Cherokees. They seem to run pretty fast.
But it's a relative dog in the Dakota.
According to all the tests I've read, Toyota's V6 Tacoma and the Nissan V6 Frontier are faster, plus they make more power on paper. Mind you, they are all fast compared to pickups of a few years back. But if I had a V8 Dakota and I got smoked by some V6 Tacoma, I'd be p!ssed.
Too bad the Hemi won't fit. Still wouldn't make up for the looks of the thing, though...

Worthless without pics. I know FORD (and now Pontiac Firebirds but I'm sticking to that), I have no clue what the Dakota looks like.

When hunting for that pic I saw the Charger. I want one.

I'm just waiting for the day my neighbor pulls up in his new Hemi Belvedere III SRT 8 4x4 SUV w/ the optional "Bling" package (26" wheels, etc)...

as for the new Dakotas I was very disappointed (It's ugly!). I for one REALLY liked the previous style R/T's and came close to buying one... I was also disappointed to find out they followed Fords lead in that they no longer offer a regular cab. I have a feeling that will happen to the Ranger before long...
