Well, let's see. I picked up a 95' Honda Civic Hatchback for $3.5k put $750.00 into it for total of $4,250. Gas for Screw costs about $46 per tank and about $16-18 per tank for the Civic. I go about 300 miles between fill ups on both. That's a saving of about $30. Insurance (minimum liability) is $130.00 per year for the Civic. If I fill up every two weeks or 26 times a year then my saving on gas will be $780 minus the $130 for a total savings of
$650. If one takes into account the fact that maintenance (mile for mile) on a Civic is considerably less than my 01' Screw then it does make good fiscal sense to buy the Civic. If this Civic last 6.5 years then it will have paid for itself and my trusty Screw will still have relatively low miles so I can continue to use it for out of town trips, weekends, and hauling.

Not that I'm a Green freak but there is also this to consider as well.

Not to mention the price of gas isn't going down. Next year at this time when its 3-4 bucks a gallon it will make even more sense.

Almost saved up enough for a bike now.

Odin has hit the nail right on the head as usual. WHY and I mean WHY would any of us want to just give our hard earned cash to an already very rich (and getting richer) oil company. At least with a fuel efficient auto you the consumer gets something back kind of an asset (car) instead of higher gas prices which will come in the near future. If we all did it they would have no choice but to lower the price due to less demand. While i love my V-8 and will never not have one i will continue to drive the rav4 and get no less than 27 miles to the gallon. Last week i drove the rav4 600 miles and used 21 gallons of gas or 45 bucks. The F-150 used in the near past about 44 gallons of gas to do the same mileage. or ~99 dollars. saving was 215+ dollars a month. This is with the air on and highway mileage. Car payment is 177 a month. works for me!!!
