Talking 85% ethanol gas

Not exactly sure where to post this topic. I have a 2001 f-150 lariat with the 4.6. Can I run the ethanol gas in this truck. Right now ethanol is 1.64 per gallon., and 87 octane is 2.35 where I am at.

Tanks,.................the denman

Probably not.
Go
here for information from Ford on what are called "Fuel Flexible Vehicles"
Ethanol is a biofuel distilled from sugar or corn (bit like moonshine ) but most engines need modifications to run on high levels because the btu output is different therefore needing different air/fuel ratios to run correctly.
You can run 10% on a regular engine with no problens at all, in fact, it would probably clean out the injectors a bit.
You could fill up with 18 gal of regular gas and 2 of ethanol but you'd only be saving a buck or so. Probably not worth the effort

No one around here has 85% ethanol gas!

Man, it seems like you could get a tune or something for that to work. Retard or advance timing, adjust a/f ratio...

Talking

Yea Illinois produces quite a bit of corn so ethanol gas is getting more and more popular here. I may contact troyer and see if he has a special tune for ethanol and if it will be effective for me in the long run. i would still need to be able to run both so that may cause some concern.

I can't see any reason why you couldn't have a flip chip with 2 different tunes as long as the injectors could keep up.
Alcohol needs more fuel and it's actually higher octane than gas so it might be good for the L guys. It runs a bit cooler too.
I seem to remember though that some fuel system parts aren't always compatible with alcohol. I think it's corrosive to some rubber and brass parts although that could be Methanol.

Check with your local Top Alcohol racer although Mike Troyer is as good a place to start as any.

Keep us posted with what you find

I had a 99 Ford Ranger with the flex fuel motor in it. As far as I know, they don't have a Triton flex fuel motor out (yet).

I only ran a couple of tanks through because at the time, the price was about the same, or within a few pennies. I lived in Minnesota, I had to drive WAY out of the way to find the 85% station. At one point, Ford even sent me a bunch of coupons for $5.00 off a tank full.

If you run 85% in a non-flex fuel vehicle...Boom!

I wouldn't run E85 even though your vehicle is 'equipped' to do so. It is hard on valve seals, etc and shortens the life of them.
