Get a Motorcycle?
I second that AMEN...........I have abumper sticker that reads:
Look twice save a life, Motorcycles are everywhere......It has a pic of a guy riding on it also.
My bike shop up here in Indiana gives these things away. Well on second thougt, I guess it helped that my dad and I have bought 4 bikes from him in the past five years, plus tons of clothing & accesories. But I'm sure if you go to some kind of poker run or rally, you can pick one up there also.

.....as well as morning dew, animals running across the road in the mornings or evenings, sun rise/setting glare, left hand turns, elderly, drunks, punk kids, sleepyness, cell phones, road debris, road hazardous, road construction, bad roads, tire blowouts, semi trucks loosing tire tread/rocks/air draft/blind spot/drugged up drivers and bike haters could KILL you in an instant. True, this applies to any form of transportion, but it applys moreso to two wheeled forms.
To ride in the early morning air and many evenings farther than a few miles at a time, you will need a helmet, extra clothing and heavy gloves, just to stay warm.....even in "warmer driving weather".
You will not save any money. None at all. Not if you are going to buy a bike at that price (with a $1000 bike you could, if it ran like a $5000+ bike).
Now, I only put about 8 thousand miles a year on my current Harley Davidson Heritage Softail Classic (and over 35K on my F150 per year). In fact, several months ago, I drove it to a business conference. I had my suits and luggage strapped to the back (I do this all the time). Coming home, I drove from Orlando, Florida to central Oklahoma, only stopping for gas and coffee!!!!! It took me about 27 hours to cover over 1400 miles!!! Yeah, I have experienced and seen alot on a bike!
I use to have a Harley "Iron Head" Sportster (kick start only) before that (and an import before that). I use to drive my sportster to work 50 to 60% of the time , rain or shine (in a sports coat, and tie).
Even with lower gas prices, I did not save a dime. But, I did not care. For me, motorcycles relief a lot of stress because you have to focus on driving and nothing eles or you die! Its a natural rush that is very addictive!
Understand the risk and get it because you enjoy it, but you will not save any money with a bike costing that much or more. Good Luck and be safe!

If you have car pool lanes in your city/state, the bike can use them too, will save you time.
On bad traffic days, my bikes saves me close to 2 hours per day, being able to lane split and use the car pool lanes.
Today, the freeway was stopped (100% stand still) for an hour or so, I lane split 10 miles, the cars weren't even moving, only went 30mph but it was faster then 0 mph.
I can also use the tollways too, save money that way too. Its a risk riding, but its gives you a rush too.

I'm in the same boat although I don't put nearly that many miles on. I just hate spending $60 or so to fill up the tank. I'm shopping for a bike right now but don't need one that costs $5k. When I peruse ebay it makes me wish I had kept every motorcycle I had ever bought. Good God they're selling for more than they were worth new back in 1980.
I think climate has a lot to do with how "functional" a bike will fit in as a commuter vehicle also. Wisconsin would have a much shorter riding season than say any of the southern states. I'm not saying folks don't ride year round up there, it's just that it adds a certain amount of PITA to go with it.
Somebody said mopeds/scooters aren't cool. That is so true but with gas prices heading towards $3 in the not so distant future, those folks that don't have a long commute and aren't on the highways are gonna look at those 100mpg critters and say dayamn. Europe, China etc. where gas is obcenely expensive, they're everywhere. I've looked at them, I just am mentally challenged seeing my fat **** on one... I want my '73 CB500 back dambit!!!

...... I love my harleys, but even the older model Kaws, Hondas etc., have way better brakes and much smoother transmissions with far less electrical problems!
After watching "Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man too many times, I decided that I was going to make my old early 80s Kaw 750 into a version of Mickey Rourke's chopped Harley FXR. I loved how low it was and the raked front end and the seat pan serving as a small rear fender about 1/2 an inch from the rear wheel. Tore it all down, molded the frame and the tank, sanded and primered EVERY part and then.........its been setting in the corner of the garage for over 10 years in pieces!
Some of those new mopeds look fun to ride, the larger ones are allowed on the freeway, they can go 100mph+.
I put around 20k miles on my bike per year, needs new tyres every 6 months though.

I just love staring at the intakes and that fat a$$ back tire
Yeah, VMAX.......that even sounds good to say....VMAX.
Talk about a torque monster! Always liked the profile....reminded me of the Harley FXR profile/frame......only much faster, lower cost and less maintenance. One of my favorite all time bikes. I came very close to buying one that had the painted portions chromed and the rear fender lowered a little.
