For all the Bush haters..

Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of happiness...

Congress held a special session to discuss the life of Terri Shiavo. They passed a bill that would allow her parents to ask a federal judge to prolong her life, by re-inserting her feeding tube. Presidnt Bush signed the law.

Before you start hating the President for doing all this evil law signing, maybe you should start with the Senators that sent it to his desk. They are only doing what they have to do. Plain and simple.

Who's job is it, by the way, to make sure all Americans have Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of happiness? Our Government.

Why are we talking about this crap? Thank the media, next time you see a Channel 4 Van, run em off the road.

If it were I, I would rather die than sit in a Hospice for 15 years But, that just me.

The same president that allowed 144 other people to die in the electric chair while the governor of Texas? None of them were brain damaged, and may have been rehabilitated. Did they get any sympathy or clemency from W? Nope, he allowed all 144 of them to die.

Hypocrisy at its finest! Great reading.....

Republican presidential candidate Gary Bauer criticized Gov. George W. Bush for making fun of an executed Texas woman in an interview Bush gave to Talk magazine. "I think it is nothing short of unbelievable that the governor of a major state running for president thought it was acceptable to mock a woman he decided to put to death." Just before her execution date, Tucker appealed for clemency on the grounds that she had become a born-again Christian. Bush's reply: " `Please,' Bush whimpers, his lips pursed in mock desperation, `don't kill me,' "

Wait wait a minute here. Since when is it the president/governors decision who dies and who lives? Isnt there a little thing that called the judicial system? Perhaps yall have heard of the thing called Checks and Balances? If not, it prevents one branch of government from having too much power.

Either way, its not congress' decision whether she should be pulled off life support. After 15 years, you would think her family would rather Terry not suffer anymore, but they are more worried about them suffering. They dont have to live with the condition that Terry does.

This is definitely a touchy subject and one that should be left up to Terri's family not the courts. I know if I were in the state she is in I would not want to be kept alive, there is something to be said for quality of life. I'm sure her parents think they are doing what is best for their child but are they really? A parents love for a child can often overshadow the facts and make it hard to see things as they are not as they would like them to be. They want to believe that she can get better because they can't take the pain of admitting that it just isn't going to happen. Barring some miracle she is not going to improve and would live out the rest of her days as a vegetable. I wish it weren't necessary to starve her to death, to me that is extremely cruel and inhumane, death with dignity should be an option to end her suffering and allow the entire family to move on with their lives.

Both my parents had to be removed from machines due to my dad having a brain tumor (cancer) and my mom had kidney failure and was diabetic along with heart problems she was on a feeding tube as was my dad. Mom was also on a respirator. I finally made the decision to have the feeding tube removed and morphine injections for my dad to relieve pain from pressure from the tumor. I had to make some hard choices and they were only 10 months apart when they died. I could not for the life of me see them continue on these machines and feeding tubes. My dad was in such pain he squeezed my hand during one attack and broke 2 of my fingers. My dad was my hero and i miss him he was a huge man of 6' 10" and had everything to live for. My mom had issues all her life and when the machines and feeding tube were taken out she died but it took 2 days of total agony for our whole family seeing how we had just removed my dads 10 months ago. My heart goes out to her family but there is a time when you just have to tell that person its okay to let go i will hold your hand and be with you through it all. My moms heartbeat slowed to under 25 beats a minute and then she was gone. My dad died in my arms in 25 hours. I do now know it was the right thing to do but at the time i second guessed myself every second. I say let her go its been way to long to continue the pain for all involved.

sorry i got off track a bit i think.

The issue is state's rights. The federal government only has certain specific rights given to it. That's why many opposed an amendment banning gay marriage, not because they are for it (gay marriage), but because they are against giving up rights. It's why we don't have a federal seat belt law, but individual states have them.

here are some morals Lariat (note, I fully respect your opinion on this):

she is allowed to live in her own personal prison... in a prison cell smaller than the worst mass murderer... she cant feed herslf... heck she cant even wipe her own a$$.

What does that make us? That makes us (as a collective population that forces her to remain alive against her "alleged" wishes) kidnappers. Thats right. We are kidnapping her and holding her against her wishes (according to her husband) This is usually punishable by a lengthy jailterm.

Pulling the feeding tube isnt murder. Pulling a trigger is. Huge difference.

Sure her wishes are not in writing. How many on this board have a living will or written documentation asking that they not be kept alive on life support? Who can foresee a brain damaging heart attack/stroke?

Good post. Many have a flawed sense of what is the government's privy and what's not. Of course there are a muriad (sp) of reasons why that is so. The federal government has no place in this, it is a private (family) matter. Period, no ifs ands or buts about it. Regardless of one's emotions and morals, none of us have a say in it either.

Personally as a parent I could never just let my child die, but in that particular situation I don't know what I'd do. She left her parent's custody @ 18 by being emancipated, and then completely when she was married. I'd say her husband has the final word in this. Now as far as removing her feeding tube, persoanally I think that's pretty effed up and if I was in the same situation I'd prefer someone shoot me in the head and get it over with. And before you hop on the pulling a trigger is murder, don't.

If the ultimate goal is to end a life, do it as quickly, and humanely as possible. Starving to death, whether she can feel it or not is not particularly the way to go in my book. Pardon me while I get down off this soap box

Let her die peacefully. It is wrong to hope that she makes some sort of a recovey cause she won't. Doctors said last night on CNN that she had no oxegen for 5 minutes to the brain. They said its just fluid in the brain where it makes decisions and creates ideas.

I pray for her! I hope the hands of god take her to a better place where she won't be a prisoner in her own body. I think this is something we all have to talk about with our families, do you want to pull the plug or leave it in if it was you?

Very sad her family is fighting like this plus the stupid government is involved? The government should not be telling you how to live your life. That's wrong.
