When I built my computer I went with AMD. Generally I am the type of guy who would have gone with Intel but I went out on a limb because the AMD was cheaper. I'm 100% satisified.

Pentium M. It takes the best parts of the P3 and the best parts of the P4 and combines them into one chip. Mainly it's meant for mobile computers (i.e. laptops). I have a Toshiba M45-S351 laptop with a 1.73 GHz Pentium M. Works great!

I have used both and both have served me well. Current PC is P4 2.8Ghz on an Abit AA8-Duramax with 512 Meg DDR2 and an x700 pro 128 Meg video card. Works great.

Let me ask this...

Aside from the P4 incident; Has anybody ever had thier system crash due to the processor?

Rule of thumb.. Your computer is only as good as the worst part in it...

Marketing wants to emphasise the procesor makes and procesor speed, amount of ram, hard drive size, etc. Most of that really only just aids the speed, reliability, and the efficiency of the system. A 2.5ghz processor runs slow with only 128 mhz of sdram. Now install 1ghz of DDR and your processor is now slower than the the memory capabilities and it is the weak link. So you upgrade to dual processors... Now need more DDR!

AHHHHHHHH it never ends because now my Hard Drive nor power supply can handle it! Somebody please make it STOP!

Ive had one flash fry, warped the heat sink and destroyed the mother board. If you get a bad one it doesnt take long to find out.

Now think of this.... Most heat sinks are Aluminum... Aluminum dosen't melt untill around 1200 degrees (I think). WOW Wonder how close you were?

The last time I bought I was told the faster the chip the greater the heat build up. The AMD will operate until it burns up where the P4 will eliminate functions until it shuts down. When it cools it will be like new where the other will have to be replaced.

The computer will be used for some gaming, nothing major and general purpose home computing... internet ****, surfing this site, word documents, excel, photos, etc...

To be fair, the guy at STAPLES wasn't just another register monkey. He's a friend of my brother, both of which are HARDCORE gamers. They play the online stuff that you can play against someone in Uzbekistan if they have a connection. He said the AMD 64 is the best thing going but had to be tweaked majorly to get to that level and the P4 isn't even maxed out yet.

I have a basic knowledge of computers, but most of this stuff is lost on me. The main reason I want a new system is the latest few games I want to buy all require more than my system can handle.

KC-10 FE out...

Most hardcore PC gamers use AMD because the do squeeze a few more FPS than the P4 there is no disputing that. Both are suited for different taks, P4 HT will generally out perform a AMD with multimedia/graphics editing work. Some say a P4 is easier to OC than a AMD. It really coems down to what you want, its no different than Ford or Chevy. P4 is my Ford, it suits me for what I do. I play games on my XBOX, I use my PC for editing large graphics files. In reality, I dont think MOST people would notice the difference in the P4 vs the AMD in gaming and vice versa with editing. It mainly shows up in benchmarks.

I can not personally stand Macintosh, thats my personal standard. Like I said before, its just like Ford or Chevy

AMD or Intel, MS, Mac, Linux

Its what makes you happy, each one has an advantage ove the other is some respect, that advantage usually attract people to a certain product as it suits them best.

I couldnt stand them either until I started working at the local paper as a graphic designer... Now I can't imagine trying to use a PC or anything else for graphics. I still have 3 other PCs in the house for everybody else and one more for my normal computing but have a Mac with Adobe suite, Quark, Premiere, etc on it for my graphics.

They can be nice for graphic editing there is no dispute, but being I do more than just that I dont really have a use for them and I just dont like em.

I have a AMD rig here thats about 6 months old and the rest are Intel's.

I dont have any qualms about any of them, the AMD I built myself (First one and went AMD because it was cheaper and I wasnt sure that I wouldnt crush, fry, or just flat out kill the CPU and be out 500 bucks) and it runs as smooth as the P4's. I can tell a difference in it when Im running PSP vs the 3.6 P4. Its not huge, but it is noticeable.
