Small yard: Riding Mower justification

OK, I'm gettign lazy about mowing my lawn- couple that with teh fact that I've always wanted a riding mower- nothing fancy- just an El-Cheapo 8 HP Murray or a more expensive snapper. I pay these guys $35.00/week to mow my lawn (June-July-August & September), I mow it myself in March, April & October.
The mower would pay for itself essentially; but I don't see any of my neighbors with one.

Do any of you guys fit this situation?
How many times have your neighbors passed and gave you the "You lazy b@$tard" look?

Did you care what they thought?

What would you do?

You lazy b@stard.. J/K

How big is your lot? If it's small then it would be more of a hassle to use a riding mower vs. a push mower. I wouldnt use a riding mower (and I am the laziest person in the world )

Try to plan out a route with a riding mower in your head and see where you'd have to come back with a push mower or weed eater to "touch-up" and see if it's actually worth the trouble.

Yep I think Jamz is right. We (family, we all live within a block of each other) have a riding mower. My lot is small (< acre) and unless it is really hot and I'm really lazy I never use it. It doesn't do as nice of a job, takes more 3-point turns than a rookie driver and takes a ton of trimming afterwards. Great for leaves in the fall but beyond that I push.

All of my neighbors have riding mowers and I still get that look.
It must be my 'goat on a rope'.

My yard is kinda hilly, sitting on an embankment, so I'd have to ride it a certain way so it doesn't topple over.

I didn't put a lot of stuff in my yard, so there aren't any obstacles. It takes me 45-minutes to one hour to mow my lawn (22 inches at a time), and it's a 90-minute to 2-hour task to do the mowing, weed-eating, and then take teh leaf blower to clear teh sidewalks..

It'd probably take me 10 on the riding mower, to mow, but another hour or so with the weed-eating, edging, leaf blowing, etc..

I don't know- I guess I just want a riding mower, for some silly reason.

Forget it for sure....forget falling over...it's gonna scalp the low side as it leans....

Fun for a few trips than it is just a huge headache....unless you have the sheer size to make it worth it....

All the more reason to get one. You would be the first, then you can watch all the neighbors get one to catch up.

Go with something with like a 72" deck and really cut down on the mowing time.

I hope that goats feet are on the ground, that could be why they are givin you the look.

Dont worry Dz, its not the size of your deck, its the way you ride. But a big deck doesnt hurt..

My puny deck wears out quickly & the blades need sharpened after just a few minutes. Your gargantuan deck prolly lasts forever, too. I'm a two cut chump.

Is it sandy where you live?

My dad goes through blades like a crack ***** goes through crack.

Sand is hard on lawn mower blades.

rent one to see if you like it.
do you have a place to keep it? (that is half the battle)

they have really good ones out there that are small single blade units in the 32-38" range and the engine is in the back.

I have a hilly property and I need to ride and balance a crazy way on some of the hills but I get no scalping and I do get the job done a lot faster.
