Linksys Router help

Question: How much data needs to gathered in order to crack a 128-bit WEP key?
Answer: roughly 7GB. Yes, SEVEN GIGAbytes.
Now, even if our online pal is downloading **** all night, it's still going to take more than a week to gather the amount of packets required for some punk to crack it. With more than 1/2 the residential WAPs unsecured, what moron is going to park outside his house for what will more than likely be several weeks to crack his WEP key?! SERIOUSLY , USE WEP FOR THE LOVE OF GOD. It's more secure than people make it out to be. For home users, its more than enough for your piece of mind. For mission-critical biz-naz & high bandwidth users it's not since the potential is there to crack the key in 2-4 hours if the WLAN is maxed out.
Bottom line, use WEP. Live it, love it, learn it.

You sound just like my buddy that just went to Orlando Fl. to attend school at Full Sail... That is so close to what one of his replies would be it's not funny!

Anything can be hacked eventually but you can do several basic things to protect your wireless connection.
1. Change default password on your router....
2. Make your SSID name something less than obvious
3. Disable SSID Broadcasting
4. Enable WEP, WPA or whatever the most secure encryption you have available.
5. Set your encryption level to the highest possible, probably 128 bit.
6. Enable MAC filtering.
7. Block any ping response your router may give.
Now granted, given enough time and desire, you can still be hacked...but most people aren't going to bother when your neighbor is "giving it away" for free by saying "Here I am, come on borrow some bandwidth"
If you need specific help, I'm willing to do so offlist if this is too boring for the rest...

The part about all this WEP hacking - War driving peoople never talk about is WHY ? What are they going to get from me to make it worth the trouble ? Free internet ? Who cares ? The evil doers will go down the road to the neighbor who bought the linksys router and its never been touched - No Wep - straight out of the box... Much easier...

Geesh
Paint your house and the paremeter interior walls with lead paint and the signal will not reach your driveway. Instead it will recochete "spelling?" around the interior possiablly increasing reception inside the house ....LOL
I would hate to have too much sanity in these forums.....
I will concede, and admit my original commit wasn't accurate. I thought, that MAC Filtering was more secure than WEP, I was wrong. Because MAC addresses are software based, they can be changed. That is bad. Sorry about that.
I will also admit, I do not know everything. I am still learning as I go, but if you think 64/128bit WEP is secure, you're simply wrong.
Alot has changed in the Wireless world some good, some bad. Wi-Fi speeds are growing in the UL spectrum, but security is way behind and there are people out there that enjoy driving around trying to get your internet and personal information.
The tools to gather free internet and that info, have also advanced. You no longer have to gather 5-10 million packets for your crack tools to be successful (more like 500,000-1M).
I am not trying to get in a pissing contest with anyone here and I don't mind admiting when I am wrong, but when I think I am right or have a valid point, I will defend it.
Because of some of the reaction I recieved I figured I'd better come back with something more tangible. If you are iterested in this discussion you may want to read this....

128-bit WEP is secure enough for home use. Yeah, some utils can crack a wep with under a million packets now. Any idea how long that punk has got to sit outside to gather them?! Long enough for them to get bored and hit another target.
My arguement isn't about the strength of the WEP, but to actually USE it. To compare - our trucks come with locks. Weak, pathetic door locks. Yet you use them. Why? Cuz an unlocked door is an invite. Would a thief bust into your truck or your neighbors that's unlocked and requires no effort? Duh.
Security isn't that far behind, it's the morons installing this stuff & the manufactures leaving crap wide open for the morons.
Again, 128-bit WEP isn't fool-proof, but adequate for home users. You should use it in your house, period!

Yea but its cheaper and easier than buying a 20 port router and running cat to every wall in the house so you will have acess where ever you are.... My wireless was less than $100 and spent about 30 mins...10/100 would have been closer to $500 and a day of install... Then still would not have been able to sit in my yard and work or search for answers here while working in the shop... LOL
Wireless security????
Sit in my driveway or in front of my house like your stakeing it out or something...If you want to find out what kingd of gun I feel like using today....That is security....LOL
