I've been looking at the apps... there are plenty out there, but your right about the price! Not completely outragous, but more than a lot of Pocket PC apps.
I tried to get my new Zire72 PDA in Blueberry, but they said they have had too many complaints about the paint flaking off.
I had to get the silver one.
Seriously though.
dzervit,
If you had a boat load of cash to invest, and were trying to decide on a tech company, who would you go with?
I'm leaning towards Sun Microsystems. Is that a bad bet in your eyes?

If it was my money, I wouldn't buy Sun right now.
Anywho... why a tech stock? If you've got a boat-load of cash a nice aggressive Mutal Fund would be a better bet and hopefully a little safer... balance the portfolio man, don't put all your eggs in one basket!

My only worry is the desktop software stops working, my PC at home goes on the fritz or my cable modem drops. That leaves me with no mail. The BWC looks reliable but I don't want to forward e-mail to it. I want the BB to interact with the desktop like a BES/corporate e-mail server would. Guess we'll see when I get it.

Tell you what you find me a single site with 5 programs that are the least bit interesting / entertaining and meet the above criteria - Ill send you a virtual 6 pack of beer thru Paypal
Doug
PS- Yes to answer your question if you don't have a BES server your desktop becomes one. - If you INTERNET connection goes down your BB stops receiving... I THINK BB has their OWN POP mail that might come direct from them BUT I have never seen it work...
Define 'decent app'. I thought all of the apps at handago are decent, with most around the $30 mark. A few in triple digits, but most are reasonable & don't require BES.
Some others I found usefull & entertaining:
http://www.thebogles.com/Berry411.htm
http://www.crossriversystems.com/PocketDayBB.htm
http://www.dynoplex.com/eOffice.shtml (pricey, but sweet!)
http://www.redskymobile.com/blackberry/index.html (no price info yet)
http://www.magmic.com/discobowling.php (I love bowling, have other games too)

What is your Paypal email - You can email it to me - emy email is in my profile and my sig
As far as Magmic - they dont count - I already bought Texas Hold Em ... they are the ONLY vendor I found that has reasonable prices for decent games.
The PocketDay thing is a JOKE - $20 bucks for what should be a share ware app to get people interested in your company's other products.
You get extra points for Berry 411 - THATS the kind of thing that the rest of the PDA world is FULL of - THats the first decent app I have EVER seen that was free.. Cudos to you for finding it
I'm hoping the Redsky will be cheap for the 7520s since it has built-in GPS. Bluetooth & GPS for other phones is easy - the GPS reciever sits on your dash and feeds the lat/long info to the BB via BT. Hopefully it includes some form of nav functionality... if it does, then it would be worth a 2-3 bill price tag. For an example of a BT GPS reciever, check out http://www.socketcom.com/product/GP0820-521.asp and http://www.delorme.com/bluelogger/
I agree Pocketday should be freeware... and Berry411 is the type of app that makes me excited to get a blackberry... while I have similar functionality on my phone it's clunky interface and snail speed make it very annoying.
You can keep the 6-pack money, as a security professional I shudder at the mear thought of having a paypal account.

What exactly is my risk - Mr Security Professional ?
Put aside the urban legends of Paypal emptying peoples accounts for no reason. Put aside the urban legends of Paypal deducting money from peoples banks without a transaction initiated by the user. Because those things simply dont happen.
I have had a Paypal account for 3 or 4 years and have had no issues. I have tried to drill down on some of the urban legend stories you see on Paypal sucks sites and NONE of them were revealing the whole story. Now that Paypal is part of Ebay - They are VERY careful NOT to let things get out of hand - Bad press associated with the prefferred payment method for the Biggest Auction site in the world would be devastating.
Is the money currently in my Paypal account potentially at risk since they are not FDIC insured ? yes - Do I care ? Not really- the convenience is worth the small risk on a small amount of money.
What if they come after my bank account ? Then there is a BIG problem - The bank goes after them.
The chance of a problem is MUCH higher when you go to a restaurant and hand you credit or debit card to a Waiter who disappears with it to the back...
Oh calm down, I didn't say anybody was an idiot. I just don't care for PP... plus, with them dishing our nearly $10 million this past summer in that class-action suit it doesn't instill the utmost confidence in them. It was a nice way to pay off some folks and not admit any wrongdoing. Lovely.
I have a real merchant account and only financial institutions handle my money. I'm funny like that. I'm sure PP is a great service for moving little amounts of money around. Yeah, I could go get a seperate account setup for PP and just move funds in/out when needed... but why all the hassle?
Sorry if I offended and PayPal users... sheesh!

I read that 3 or 4 times and everytime it seemed a shot.
If it wasnt My apologies
I just wanted to be sure that the folks that dont have the background to look at and understand the details of what happened will see both sides of the story

If the BB had built in GPS that would be cool,
But to have to buy the app and the hardware and plop it in the dash makes it less usefull + less valuable in my mind
If you read this a couple times

- it seems that NONE of the BB have GPS built in

It honestly wasn't a shot, I've been enjoying our echange thus far. Good info. I guess I shoulda said "nevermind, I don't have a PP account".
Anywho, with the millions of members Paypal has it can't be all bad. With that many members there is sure to be a lot of folks that don't like something and create a big stink. The concept of the service is great, but I'm so untrusting of folks I can't bring myself to take the time to setup a seperate bank account and then link that to paypal. There are just so many evildoers trying defraud PP and it's members I'd rather stay away.

Nextel already has a service for their GPS-enabled phones..

I'd be hella-cool if you could pin-point your location and see it on a map w/ your BB.
