Ethernet Cable help
Dumb question is there a way to tell difference between straight-through and crossover cable just by looks ?
to add to this question i have a cable thats installed in the house now can't remember if its crossover or straight through anyways it runs from point A to point B i'm changing internet supplier from satelite to wireless if this ethernet cable is the wrong one can the installer just cut off the end and change it from straight-through to a crossover ?

Take for instance;
Straight will look like this pattern on both ends (colors can change but they always match on both ends)
White Orange
Orange
White Green
Blue
White Blue
Green
White Brown
Brown
A cross over will have the above on one end and
White green
Green
White orange
Blue
White Blue
orange
White Brown
Brown
Cables 1 & 3 and 2& 6 are swapped.

Easy way to tell is the method vader listed, although there are two different types of arrangements for patch cables (straight-through cables).
Also, if you had the cable connected directly to two computers (no hubs/switches/routers involved) then it is probably a crossover cable. If your cable was going from a modem to the computer, its probably a patch cable.
If necessary, yes the installer can cut off the end and re-wire it.

Great if they can just rework the cable that saves me some work its plenty long at each end its installed in the wall and underfloor but goes exactly where i need it Can't wit to get rid of this Satelite internet damn software / provider is a pain in the ***
If the cable worked for one provider it should work for another.
Cross overs are generally used to connect hubs and like Johngs said, two computers directly.
You should be fine.
Changing a cable end is a 5 minute job.....nothing to it.

Zacky, Vader is 100% correct in the pattern of the pairs of the cable. If for some reason you did what he said and put the colors in order they would go from left to right, that's just the way I look at them when I terminate them, but it should work as is right now......just my 2 cents.
