I saw an episode on that on PBS... Maybe it was the discovery channel. DAMN INTERESTING.

OH... and the prototype HYDROGEN CARS... Yeah they produce more pollution that the typical GASOLINE passenger car!

You don't hear about that either.

I also remember Mrs. Tether (an old indian lady), telling me stories about how Earth is a living organism. The earth is where life begins and ends. We, as people, are like fleas on a dog back. The fleas are fine and dont bother the dog until it bites. Well, we are those "fleas" and we are biting the dogs back and Mother Earth is defending herself.

Does that make sense. Think of cutting down the rain forests and all these new sicknesses in the world today. Mother earth is surfacing these sicknesses to fight back against mankind.

Not sure if you are serious here or not about the whole mother earth thing but....

rocking crust surrounding a mantle that surrounds Iron Ore core.....sounds really Alive doesn't it....

The earth isn't a living organism....it is a rock with a thermal core that provides the right environment for life to survive and thrive.

Why would "Mother Earth" fight back against one of it's own "children". Eco-Bunk

Cutting down rainforests will/may have an effect long term on the Earth's atmosphere...heck it may even kill us but the rock will float on at least until our little ole Sun fries it in a nova.

Our diseases are more caused by overpopulation and poor living conditions not "Mother Earth's" revenge. Sounds like a Michael Moore film.

I love the outdoors but ain't no Mother Earth here...

I hear ya Vader, but that was just stories from an old lady. I found them interesting, and thats what got me interested in all this stuff.

I LOVE METEOROLOGY, and everything involved with it. I love thunderstorms, tornandos, rain, El Nino, effects of the jet stream, what causes snow, and high and low pressure fronts, etc. I should have went to school to be a weather man, but Im an idiot. I joined the Marine Corps instead. Now I just read about it, and thius topic is perfect.

Let’s put it in perspective how scientist use to little data to back up their claims. To do this I will use the stock market.

Ok, the Earth is thought to be 4.5 to 4.8 billion years old. For my example I am going to use the figure 4 billion years.

Now, we know scientist are only using data that is a few hundred years old if that but for this example I am going to presume their data goes back 500 years.

Therefore, to give a perspective of how much data scientist are using let’s divide 500 years into 4 billion to come up with a percentage, this would be the percentage that 500 years is to 4 billion years.

500 years / 4 billion years = 0.000000125

Now 0.000000125 X 100 = 0.0000125%

Following so far?

Now, the stock market open in 1865 so that makes it 140 years old, or in operation. So 1 year equals 365 days, but the stock market is only open on weekdays. So to figure out how many actual days a year the stock market is open we subtract the weekend days (104 days) from 365 to arrive at 261 days a year the stock market is open for trading. I am just ignoring holidays to make this simple.

The fun part begins, if we use the stock market to put what scientist are using for data on global warming into perspective all we have to do is determine how many hours the stock market has traded for in the past 140 years.

Easy, 261 days X 140 years = 36,540 days total. Now multiply that by 8 hours a day and you get 36,540 days X 8 hours = 292,320 hours.

So here is how you put the 500 years of data (remember I am giving them twice the amount of data they actually have) the scientist are using into perspective. We arrived at 0.0000125% which is the percentage of time the scientist are using to “predict” what temperatures have done and are possibly going to do.

Total stock market trading hours 292,320 X 0.0000125% = 3.65 or 3 hours and 39 minutes.

Now I ask, who is going to determine how the stock market is going to do for the next 100 plus years based on the last 3 hours and 39 minutes of trading?

The tree huggers just don’t get it…

I think that has to do with the change of the jet stream. If I remember corectly the jet stream has a lot to do with how a cold front reaches Texas. Now that it has "moved" or changed, the colder air warms up before it reaches this region.

*How far off am I?*
Ya no kidding. A guy cant even make a snowman these days lol. I can even remember back when i was a kid..still am..lol..but there used to always be snow on the ground from december on. Now if we get two snowstorms a year thats it. I have it all figured out why though. Back three years ago we had a hard winter with lots of snow. I took all of my earnings that i had saved up for a truck and bought a snowmobile. To this date it has yet to snow a decent about to go ride. So thus i have only put on about 200 miles. I bet if i sell it it will snow

OK, here's what I want to know about Hydrogen cars (if they ever come out)

The gleeful claim is that the only emission is water vapor.

Let's assume for a minute that is true.

Let's take my home town . . . Los Angeles. A former desert, pretty dry place, no humidity.

Here, in this town, we have about 20 billion cars. Almost all streets are parking lots 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. That's a lot of cars harldy moving or not moving, engines running, ralphing out fumes.

With all those cars spewing out water vapor, and heat, won't that turn LA into a humid tropical zone?

Will we turn into a humid, sweaty, hellhole like Florida?

Inquiring minds want to know.

For those really interested in the "Global Warming" scam , get a copy of Michael Crichton's new novel, "State of Fear". He uses the 'vehicle' of a ficticious novel to prove(the book is 'foot-noted' showing the facts) that GM'g is an 'industry' of people seeking funding for their skewed-science .

He use to be a 'believer' in GW'g and then he researched and studied it and its 'believers'. You will be surprised at his findings and it's a 'hael' of a good story as well.

The oceans are NOT rising. Global temps have actually gone down over the last century.

01 XLT Sport, That is a great analogy. It puts it in perspective. Now I see what I have been doing wrong when investing in the market. Everything I have bought reacts pretty much like a boat anchor. I will have to research more... much more.

Ha-ha-ha!
I get a kick out of these debates.
The Earth is at the end of an ice age. Meaning the world is going to warm up. That is what it has done for billions of years. That is what we are going through now.
I hate to tell you this, but the ice age ended ~10,000 years ago!

Do web search for CO2 concentrations that have been collected in Hawaii. When you find hte diagram, you'll see CO2 (a MAJOR component of green house gases) has steadily risen annually since around 1950 (when the data started being collected).

Also, if you want to know more about stadial/interstadial (glacial/interglacial for the layman) cycles, do a search for 'Kreb Cycles'. I would explain it, but I don't feel like rehashing my Midwest Paleoclimate course.

Oh yeah, although man has only been researching this stuff for ~100 years or so, ice cores that are/have been collected in Greenland and Antartica contain representative samples of the atmosphere at the time of the ice/snow deposition, which allows scientists to know the relative concetrations of different atmospheric gases at the time of deposition.

The claim I like is that ocean levels are rising and the salt content of the ocean is also going up. If glaciers melting is causing the ocean to rise and glaciers are nothing more than centuries of compacted snow how the h can the salt level of the oceans be going up. When was the last time you tasted a salty snowflake?

Personally, I don't care if the planet is warming up. I don't care if man is the cause or not. I don't care that we are destroying the planet (or not . . . depending on who you listen to). I don't care if we are depleating the planet of it's natural resourses. I don't care that we are leaving nothing for future generations and that we are ruining the lives of our children . . . .

All I care about is, and all I want out of life is . . . .

To play golf at Augusta National . . .

To shoot in the low 70's just once . . .

and to get a date with this woman . . .

To hell everything else.
