Cool Wow, freaky!!

We are finally getting a break from the snow. We ended up with about 26" total since last Sunday, my arms are sore from shoveling every day for the past week! Now it's raining so it should be a real nice mess out there for a few weeks until all the snow goes away. That is if it doesn't decide to freeze and make an ice rink out of the entire city!

Anyhow...this is something that's pretty freaky...we live near a mountain that's called Thunder Mountain. The reason it's called that is because it is fairly steep and has numerous avalanches. I never really heard or saw any last year but tonight we were outside with the dog and with all the light fluffy snow we got and now the rain it's causing avalanches! We heard at least 3 come down, couldn't see them because it was dark out. Kinda gives you the ******* but we are a safe distance from the mountain, it'd have to be one heck of a big avalanche to reach our house. It's just kinda eerie to hear them like that! Hope they are still coming down tomorrow so we can see one!

Just wanted to share, thought it was cool!

Now is your chance to try some "avalanche surfing" with a snow-board...

Sorry, no pictures. Couldn't even see the mountain today, too much fog and rain. And definitely no snow boarding!! I know I'd hurt myself!

The base of the mountain is about 1/2 mile from our house. Most of the avalanches originate near the top of the mountain which is a good 2 miles, crow flying distance, and 3600 feet up. Our house by comparison is at around 15-20 feet. It would be an extreme avalanche to reach us and as our house was built in the 70's I don't think it's in danger. But you're right it is very creepy to be able to hear but not see them. We could hear them so well you could actually hear the sound of the snow moving against itself, you know the kind of crunchy noise it makes. That's a lot of power to be heard over a 2 mile distance that clearly!
