I've got nothing against Canada but that’s pretty lame, you might just as well were a t-shirt that says, "I'm American but I hate my Government's Policies" that should make Americans traveling abroad popular as heck, they'll be buying you drinks. One of the reasons I have no interest in setting foot outside of the borders of the United States in b/c of the need for stuff like this. I have a class with a guy from France and I don't feel the need to ask him why his government is cowardly, corrupt, and has delusions of grandeur, that’s just rude. JMHO Again nothing against Canada.

I think if someone from the US is too yellow to be proud to be an American and needs to wear that shirt is a "Girly Man"

I traveled a little through Italy, England. Germany and Switzerland about 25 years ago and Americans were wearing Canadian Flags even then. This isn't new. Young travelers stay in Hostels and low cost housing with people who don't live by political beliefs. They just want to travel hastle free and return home safe. It was easier then but still wouldn't wear their own flag.

I've travelled quite a bit (not in the past 3 years since we started having kids) and certainly have noticed youngsters I suspected as being American wearing Maple Leaf pins/apparel. Maybe they are 'embarrassed'. Maybe they think they are safer. Maybe they avoid a few arguements in the youth hostel. Maybe they are immature stupid kids.

Whatever.

I am proudly American and have been welcomed and treated with grace and affection by people world-wide. In some cases, I have been treated very well precisely BECAUSE I am from the USA. Even in places like France, Turkey and Egypt. There there are many worldwide who:

1) Would love to live in the USA and relish learning about our great country.
2) Are grateful for our business and tourism
3) Appreciate our past help

If you hide the fact you are from the USA, you will never know the pleasure of having discussions with these people.

Of course, I would not make a target of myself in a hostile environment. Butd espite what the media would like you to beleive, but there are MANY people around the world who still admire and respect the USA.
