FX4 is a 4x4 w/ a fancy sticker, skid plates, Rancho shocks, it used to include 17 inch wheels, but I'm not sure about now

So it is the exact same as the 4 X 4 Off Road Package (aside from the decal)?

I think the FX4 option varied from year to year. I have a 2002 and it came with electric shift on the fly, the skidplates, 17inch wheels, Rancho (Ford) shocks, and those big FX4 stickers on the rear fender panels.

Try this thread for an answer to the same question:

Thanks for the help all!

I have recently purchased a 2000 F150 4 X 4 with the "Off Road" package. It included 17'' wheels, elec. shift 4 wheel drive, skid plates, I am unsure about the shocks though. I just got into a debate on "whats better" with a co - worker, but they seem to be about identical (aside from the decal of course).

Thanks again!

From what I know, FX-4 was was an option (2001 - 2003), now it's a trim-level that's darn near equivalent to the Lariat, with the exception of being blackened or color-keyed on accent locations where the Lariat is either chromed, brushed or wood-trimmed.

Aside from skid plates, etc- I don't know what an FX-4 would offer you that a Lariat 4 x 4 wouldn't, but, an XLT 4 x 4 would not allow you the option (At least not in 2004) of having a floor mounted shifter w/Captain's chairs whereas the FX-4 and Lariat will...

I'd love to have a black SuperScrew trimmed out, black on black like the FX-4, but riding low like a 4x2 rather than high like a 4x4.

An obvious sign of good taste!

The FX4 package replaced the 4x4 Off Road Package. This is the package contents for 2003.

• 17-inch 5-spoke cast aluminum wheels with stainless steel
lug nuts
• P265/70R17 OWL all-terrain tires (includes spare)
• Optional LT265/70R17 OWL all-terrain tires are
recommended for demanding off-road use
• Heavy-duty white/red Rancho shock absorbers — recognized
by serious off-road truckers as one of the best choices for
hard-core off-road use
• FX4 Off-Road decals
• Skid plates (fuel tank, transfer case and frame front
crossmember)
• 3.55 limited-slip rear axle; 3.73 limited-slip rear axle on
SuperCrew
• Dark Shadow Grey wheellip moldings and front bumper top
cap on XLT
• Optional Two-Tone paint combinations are all combined with
Dark Shadow Grey lower Two-Tone on XLT, and Arizona
Beige or Silver Metallic on Lariat
• Available XLT exterior colors:
– True Blue Clearcoat Metallic
– Black Clearcoat
– Oxford White Clearcoat
– Silver Clearcoat Metallic
– Burgundy Red Clearcoat Metallic
– Bright Red Clearcoat Metallic

Note: ESOF is a stand alone option.

IMHO, the package is not worth it except for the 17" wheels.
