Question Where to get dyno'd?

Just curious, where does one go to get their truck dyno'd? Is this done at a performance shop? What all is involved and what does it cost?

Thanks for the info guys.

I'm going to move this one down to General Zoltan. I think you'll get more traffic and probably get a more direct answer....

Typically it is usually performance shops that have dyno’s. You could ask around or look for some speed or performance shops in your phone book.

I have heard it cost an average of $60 - $100 to get three pulls (3 dyno runs) Usually what is involved is they drive it up so the rear tires are on the drum of the dyno and then tie down the vehicle, place a fan in front to provide some air flow put it in drive and run it through the gears up until 3rd gear and then run it from about 2,500rpm to redline, around 5,200 or so.

They will also place a sensor up the tail pipe or where one of the oxygen sensors are located to monitor and record you’re A/F’s (air / fuel ratio) to insure it is at a safe level.

If your truck is stock then everything should be fine. If it has a tune on it then it is very wise to know where the A/F is.

Hopefully someone with better and more accurate information will come along and correct anything I may have wrong here, but it should be pretty close…

damn close, but the pulls usually start around 3200 rpms

I think my truck has only had about 25/26 dyno pulls......

So educate me. The dyno only tests hp and torque, correct? How is the hp tested? I realize getting up on the drums is how the torque is tested. Excuse my ignorance.

Damn, I need to get this thing dyno'd. Just wish I would have done it after each of my performance mods. Would have helped the guys on the forum.

Actually what a dyno does is measure torque:

Horsepower = RPM’S x Torque / 5252

The 5252 is a constant used to compute hp using torque

So, if you had 300 lb-ft of torque at 5,200 rpm your horsepower would be:

5,200 x 300 = 1,560,000/5252 = 297hp

I should have added that on a dyno graph you will see the horsepower line and torque line of the graph cross at 5252 rpm

Which mod?

Zoltan, which mod gave you the most noticable perfomance difference? I've added a Magnaflow catback... single in with dual out. I went with the true-flow cold intake due to the K&N not be CA legal. I've ordered a 1714, but have yet to receive it. Mine is an 04 SuperCrew Lariat 4x4. I almost the bought the FX4, but at the last minute decided on the Lariat. 1800 miles so far..... it was delivered to me with 17 miles on it.

It is really hard to tell. I have had the exhaust on it the longest. That gave me some hp's and nice throaty sound. The install of the intake and tuner were very close together. Maybe a month apart. Intake then tuner. I am still getting used to the increase in sound from the intake. I was told by K&N that when they come out with the 50 state legal FIPK that they would send me my CARB sticker. I don't think they check for that sort of thing down here anyway.

I think the tuner really gave me the most difference. That thing kicks a$$. The shift points really brings it home, but the combination of the three...I can't even discribe it. Totally different truck. I have yet to lay some rubber but I am itching to and I am sure it could now. When you get that tuner, you won't be able to get out of your truck sideways.

BTW, nice truck, I love that dark green, wish it would have come on the FX4. I work with a guy who owns a truck just like that.

Nice....

My truck looks nice, but it still looks like Grandpa's truck to me. I don't usually buy rims, but I might not have a choice. I think either 295's or 305's with some nice rims will definantly make a world of difference. Your's looks sporty...... mine looks to low and gentle. I want tall and mean...... without lifting it. Maybe I'll put my tires and rims in the classifieds? I looked today and for the tires and rims I wanted was $2200.00 out the door. Expensive.....
