Not saying all Brits are this way, but those 2 guys have a low opinion of Americans. It is as plain as day. Not that we really care if one Corvette sells in Europe.

the reason is this...

this is a remake of the GT40 which was a race car in a Euro race competing against other Euro cars (especially Ferrari) so to these reviewers it is a pseudo Euro race car wheras the Corvette is represents everything about America that Europeans dislike.

Like what for instance....?

What is it that you think Europeans dislike about America.

Strange that the USA is the number one destination for the British on vacation!!

Personally...but you know this already...I love the US, I love American cars (I also love cars...period) , and I particularly love Corvettes.

Let me try and explain....and please bear with me because this is a lone battle I have been fighting for 25 years.

You have mis-conceptions about Europeans in the same way that we have mis-conceptions about you.

It is partly the fault of the media and partly just the way life works.

A lot of my friends, who have never been to the US, but nevertheless are educated people who I think should know better have prejudices built up over the strangest sometimes most trivial things.

Let me use one example...and please, read on and don't jump down my throat before you get to the end.

Do you know that over 90% of Americans DON'T have passports.
Therefore a lot of Americans visiting Europe are the few who do who often are perhaps well off, used to getting things their own way, and are sometimes rather loud and verbal in doing so.
These are sometimes the only contact people who have NOT travelled to the States have with Americans.
They therefore think you are all the same...stupid but true.

This is just one example.

There are lots of others. Most it must be said as I mentioned the fault of the media.
A lot of Europeans must think that Baywatch, Dallas etc. is what America is like.

Even those huge numbers who DO travel to the States often go to Florida....and let's face it there's not much there to show them what life is like for the vast majority of Americans living in Kansas, the Dakotas or anywhere else !
Like I said I have spent YEARS trying to persuade my friends to come and see the real America.

Those that do are ALWAYS genuinely astonished.

How friendly everyone is....how moral and god fearing most American families are...and in general just how nice the place is.
Some friends of ours who came out to visit us in March had NEVER been to the States before.
Within 3 days they had bought a piece of land and want to build a house to spend a few months each year there !

BUT...it rams home the point .... you have to be there to understand it and see it.
In the same way when Americans come to the UK I usually tell them not to go to London or Shakespears home but come to the rural Shire counties and see what ordinary life is like for most of us !

I have travelled all over the States for 25 years...hundreds of thousands of miles....and sometimes I STILL don't think I understand the place.

It's not perfect....don't get me wrong.

Sometimes I even point out the odd thing....and don't I regret it usually !
BUT it is heartwarming to see the patriotism of the way you stand up for America !

But please don't make sweeping generalisations because the story is sometimes very different !

More later.

valid points.

To be clear, I am stereotyping Eurpoeans in general. I think the British are the least likely to dislike or misunderstand Americans.

I'm thinking French and German in particular and their influence on other nations and their people.

In all fairness, I'm Canadian so I can see both sides of the coin and do in fact see it going both ways.

I have one point that you need to disprove before I will retract my statement.

why do Americans on a cross-Eurpoe hiking/wandering vacation need to carry the Maple Leaf on their backpacks and claim to be Canadian when they meet locals? Why is it that they need to claim another nationality to get respect and not be treated poorly?

And we both know that this happens.

No US citizen NEEDS to do this. I have travelled in Europe four times (though the last time was about 3.5 years ago). The number of people who have been kind and friendly to me because I am from the USA far outumbers the 'haters', even in France.

I have seen 'rude Americans' (the stereotypical, loud kind) getting treated badly by the same people who were friendly to me. Showing respect and interest in your host country goes a LONG way toward getting you a friendly reception, no matter what your nationality is. People who rarely travel may not learned that lesson.

I am sure a few American backpackers have donned a Maple Leaf. Why? Maybe they read it was a good idea in some trendy travel book. Maybe they know some people from around the world have hatred and jealousy for the USA, so they think they will get less hassles on their vacation by disguising their nationality. Maybe backpackers at youth hostels are more likely to encounter anti-American types. Maybe our US backpackers are more likely to be young and in a period of hating their own country (though when they grow up and do more travelling, they are likely to get a greater appreciaton of our nation).

Personally, I think it is unnecessary for any US citizen to pretend they are Canadian.

I have never heard this before and never come across it !!

I think a lot of the stereotypes and problems come from places like London, where the tourist traps often give a false impression and where people maybe don't have the time to spend being friendly.

Again, speaking for myself, and I may be atypical...if ever I hear an American or Canadian voice and the situation warrants, I will always go over and ask if they are finding things OK, or if they need any local knowledege.
Good pubs or places to visit etc.

And this IS happening more and more especially where I live in the English Midlands at the heart of the canal network.
More and more Americans are coming over and renting a narrow boat for a couple of weeks or so and exploring a part of the country that they would not normally think of coming to.

A bit like when we visit rural communities and towns in Iowa, or Kansas, or anywhere.

When people come up to us and so "What on earth are you doing here?"
That's when we know we are in the right places !!

-------------------------------------------------------------

I'm not sure what point you are making ?

Several times recently I have seen the phrase..."I could care less",
on these forums.

This is really puzzling me.....don't you mean....

" I couldn't care less"

If you "could care less" it means by definition you do care somewhat.

Am I missing something?!

If you do mean what I think you may mean...please put me right if I'm missing the point, then you are totally living up to the very point that is made by one of the comments that you directed us to.

A comment made by an ignorant self opinionated person who obviously has no understanding of America and Americans.

He IS not typical, but if by your comment you are totally putting aside my efforts to show what I feel is the true picture, with just one short blunt statement, then all you are doing is helping to perpetuate the ideas some foreigners have of you.
