mp3 Question

After downloading some mp3s that I purchased from prominant places on the internet, I've noted that, when I play the song, it starts normal and then proceeds to skreech out of control and, in some instances, attempts to play backwards (again, sounding like a skreeching digital sound).

I'm utilizing WinAmp (I know... it's old skewl but, it's never let me down up until recently).

Anyone know what the deal is? I thought it was probably some type of copyright protection but, is there any way around it? The songs appear to be in tact but simply won't play correctly.

Haven't you got mp3 pro also.

This old little proggy might work for you, RP.

First make a copy of your mp3,s.

Run Uncook95.exe
Choose if you want to overwrite or you want to add a new name for the file.
Load your mp3 by choosing Open in the File menu.
Select your MP3 in the box.
Click on Uncook.

And your mp3's might work now.
But first make copies of your mp3's.

Rightclick, save as.....

Download Uncook95.exe

Hope it works.

Thanks for the help guys.

Just tried something different which leads me to believe that it's Winamp (it sucks the llama's hoof).

I DL'd a player called C-4. It plays it all without the irritating screeching.

Any other thoughts?

If you are DLing from kazaa then I dont think Winamp is your problem.

The RIAA gets alot of the mp3s on there and they edit them so that you cant listen to them. Many time they include some high pitched sounds.

Try redownloading the song (from a different user), and dont use the most popular one (ie, the one with the most users). If you have a high bandwidth connection, you can try it, but if youre on 56k Id suggest staying away from the ones with tons and tons of users (if possible).

I have to agree Johngs but, it's strange that it works with C4 and not WinAmp. Also, I tried to burn the same songs with NERO and have the EXACT same problem. VERY strange.

I haven't used WinAmp in some time, so here is the ?: Can winamp handle a variable bitrate MP3? I'm guessing you have a few songs encoded with a variable bitrate as apposed to other that are encoded with a constant bitrate like 128 or 192. Newer programs are able to handle reading a variable bitrate mp3. Just a thougth...

Bingo.

That is probably it.

I watched the bitrate on one of the 'bad' songs while using Winamp... it *WAS* changing! Actually, it would climb and, then, when it started to fall as it approached 128, that's when the poo hit the fan and it started sounding like a digital aresonal.

Have any recomendations for programs for playback? This C4 proggy is okay but, difficult to use because of the ULTRA small buttons.

Give iTunes a whirl. It's a nice way to organize, burn, and play your mp3 collection. And I *think* it can handle the variable bitrate files...

I used to use MusicMatch, but that had issues with syncing varialbe bitrate files w/ my iPod. D'oh!
