WinAmp 5.01 here and no problem with variable bitrates.
What version WinAmp are you using? 1.8

Have any recomendations for programs for playback? This C4 proggy is okay but, difficult to use because of the ULTRA small buttons.

What version of winamp were you running.

I've never had any issues with it running variable bitrate mp3s.

In any case, if you are running an older version, Id suggest trying upgrading to version 5.x.

If you want to try something other than Winamp, Musicmatch is pretty popular, but I dont really like the interface, it seems so complicated just to add a song.

Windows Media Player should be ok, its up to version 9, which you can get off the windows update site.

Those are the 3 most popular players I know of.
