Alaska bound !
Any Alaska folks out there ? I'm taking a rafting trip the first of August down the Sheenjek River (8 days) just south of the Brooks Range. We are getting dumped off by bush planes by the Arctic Village. Just looking for some first hand knowledge on what to expect....
Thanks in Advance !

In Alaska?
I thought they were in Florida, and other warm, humid places.
I know about the bears . . . but the mosquito thing . . . are you sure about this?
(Actually, I remember once hearing that it actually gets humid in Alaska in the "summer", but I have a hard time believing this.)

Mosquitoes live in wet places right?
Can you think of a place that is much wetter than an area that has snow melt all summer long?
Yes, expect mosquitos.
Having said that, I AM SO JEALOUS!!!!!!!
I'm suppose to go rafting on the Upper Gauley in WV in the fall, but it may not work out now - my wife's 10 yr class re-union is the weekend I have the trip scheduled for, and our due date for the baby is about 3 weeks after that.

From what I have read the tempature can very from 40 deg. one day and then 90 the next. Most the time it seems the temps hold in the 60's and 70's. AND YES I know the mosquitos can be a killer up there. Plus it's daylight 24 x 7.......

I've lived in Alaska 27 of 33 years, just relocated to SLC, anway, YES, there are mosquitos, there's a running joke about Mosquitos being Alaska State Bird, bring your repellent and bring lots of it.
Here's a quote from Northwoods Lodge
"Contrary to popular belief, the mosquito is not Alaska's state bird ! We have Cutter's and Muskol repellent for sale at the lodge, and we provide mosquito coils for use around the guest cabins (mosquitos are rarely encountered while fishing from the boat and almost nonexistent after August). "

i recently started researching a trip to alaska for next year. so far what i've gleaned is that the beautiful sunny day pictures are for the most part rare. mostly overcast and chilly.
the first thing most books say is bring your rain coat, and bug spray, and air tight containers for food (bears).
i want to do the sea kayaking and try to see the humpbacks myself as well as some hiking, and of course fishing.
i am so jealous, i want to go now.
if you need more info, and feel the urge, you could go to www.cycleforums.com and look around for a guy named jester. he used to be a guide for river trips and fishing in alaska.
much info available from him. he is booking on a bike trip tomorrow though but will be back by mon i think.

I live in Anchorage, which is considered northern Washington. Here we don't fear the bears near as much as the mosquitoes!
The other thing, is that the Interior's mosquitoes, tend to feed our mosquitoes to their young.
You'll have a blast. Be prepared for rain, and mosquitoes and you'll be fine.
