SEU1,

I've never been that far North (there's plenty of fun to be had around South-Central Ak) so I cant tell you bout the weather up there.

If you want a good fishing trip while your going through Anchorage. These folks are quite accomodating Last Frontier Adventures. I just happen to know them very well

I found this little chart that gives weather history for Arctic Village.

Gauley River Post from before

To the Upper Gauley Rafter:

I did this a few years back, and it os a BLAST!!!

Going into it, I had very little respect for the poweer of water currents, class 4 and 5 rapids, etc. But I learned quick that these rapids can and will kill you if you aren't in good or great physical condition. That river is a trip!!! I got sucked under and spit out about 200 feet downstream with a blink of an eye. And this happens while wearing a full upper torso life jacket. So be careful and have fun!

BTW, my **** was sore for two days from being puckered for for 8 hours.

Also, about Alaska, if its anything like Canada, there will be mucho mosquito.

In Alaska?

I thought they were in Florida, and other warm, humid places.

I know about the bears . . . but the mosquito thing . . . are you sure about this?

(Actually, I remember once hearing that it actually gets humid in Alaska in the "summer", but I have a hard time believing this.)
Believe what everyone is telling you about the mosquitoes!! I used to have a picture of some trees, in the picture you could see this dark cloud hovering in front of the trees...it was mosquitoes!! The no-seeums are killer too.

Like bandit, I have never been that far north but around the Fairbanks area the temperatures can be quite warm in the summer, even into the 80's and 90's. We were up there in early June a few years back and it was already in the upper 70's. Camping is very weird when it never gets dark, the campfire just doesn't have the same affect.

Load up on the bug spray, bring your rain gear, a weapon substantial enough to actually make a bear think twice and your camera because the scenery is awesome and don't forget to have a great time!!

Thanks everyone for all the info. I'm looking forward to it. Bears, mosquito's, no see-ums, bring it on......... If you don't see me post anymore after August 15th, you'll know I was either eaten by a bear taken hostage by mosquitos or just plain didn't come back..

Take Care !

mskid -
We've done the Lower new River twice, and the Middle/Lower once. I finally got the wife to let me spend the money on the Upper/Middle - actually she insisted I do it this year because she knows she can't go, and is intmidated by its reputation.

RP - screw you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Right now I'm writing a Phase I and butting heads with the 'Project Manager' over the template and what I consider unnecssary content. Get this - he wants who provides all the utilities to the site in the report, and he even asked me how often the dumpster is emptied!

Are you sure you're not hiring?

Actually, I may be getting out of the consulting field - I recently had a unique business opportunity presented to me...

My raft was lucky enought to have some little hippie girl as our guide/expert. She was a little cutie with the perfect body and hippie attitude and all, so hopefully you will get as lucky as I did. Since the wife will not be around, that is.

Who did you go with? We've been with Rivers, Extreme Expeditions, and Rivermen. We did the Middle/Lower Gauley w/ Rivermen, and the guide you describe sounds like the guide we had for it. We're going back w/ Rivemen this year.

I live a couple hundred miles south of the Brooks Range. August is the rainy season, also the temps. start cooling off about mid month. Skeeters can be troublesome however a good head net will save the day. Can be found at surplus stores or oufitters. Bears are main object of concern while in the bush, however your guide will be prepared for them. Good luck and have fun.

I feel the love. LOL!

Getting out of consulting? I can't imagine why! (in short, I feel your pain).

Odd that I just read this (as I missed it when you posted) but, I'm kind of going through the exact same thing on an ESA that I did down in Bowling Green. Not quite the same scenario but, more the language that I utilized to cover our butts (or at least I thought it was CYA language).

It went something like this...

"A subsurface investigation may be necessary to achieve a greater degree of certainty that XXXXX (dry-cleaner site) has not impacted the study site...".

I mean, we're talking PERC here! Stuff that moves through solid concrete!

His stance is recommend Phase II or not. Simply put. I see his side but, on the flip side of that coin, I don't want to recommend doing $4k worth of work when the likelihood is slim but, on the flip side, I want to recommend it just so that we cover our rumps. You and I both know that ESAs are the highest-risk work that we do in this industry, relatively speaking.

Ahhh, the joy.

Oh yeah, utilities must be in the report if you adhere to the ASTM standard (E1527-00). Sorry.

I don't imagine I will get out of for a little while - since the wife is pregnant, I need the health insurance. I think I'll probably keep consulting until next year, and then try to go totally on my own. This opportunity involves fire hydrants and backflow devices - so by an 'enginnering' view, I'll still be in the enviornmetnal field.
"A subsurface investigation may be necessary to achieve a greater degree of certainty that XXXXX (dry-cleaner site) has not impacted the study site...".
Couldn't you have said someting like, "A slight potential exists for subsurface contamanination to exist due to the proximity of XXX Dry Cleaner. A subsurface investigation may be necessary to ascertain whether the susurface of the Site has been impacted; however, any resulting contamination would be presumed to the responsibility of XXX Dry Cleaner. (insert your company name here) recomends that the Client consult legal council familiar with environmental litigation." - or something like that (just a little blurb off the top of my head)

How many sides does that coin have?

I only recall seeing that the source of potable water must be identified, and sewage disposal system must be identified.

I typically adressed this be saying the site is on a well, or the site is connected to municipal or rural water, or the site is on a septic system or connected to the sanitary sewer. I never went into detail saying the potable water is supplied by X Water Company, and the sewage is treated by XX POTW. And I don't recall anything in ASTM 1527-00 saying you must identify the electric and/or natural gas providers. If I've just missed it, let me know (and I want it cited!).
