Anybody had their wisdom teeth removed?

Im getting all 4 of mine removed ...it'll be at least a week still since I will be out of town starting Wedsnesday, but they have already given me the prescriptions (vicoden, penecillan(sp), and medrol (?)) and whatnot.

Experiences, thoughts, etc?

I had mine removed when i was ~22. Its not bad i was put under with some sodium penathol (sp) (great stuff). It was not to painfull afterwards but trying to get a steak through a straw is really tough. Its not a big deal. I am sure they have made great advances since i had mine done seeing how i am almost 50 now. good luck and don't sweat it.

I had my done when i was 21 (which was about the late 19th century). You'll have pain killers (I had codine back then).

Messiness will depend on whether you have dry sockets or not.

Nothing to worry about. The extent of your discomfort will depend on the quality and potency of the drugs you are RX'd.

BuckDropper is right...don't worry about this..If your doing it now, the doctor must have a good reason that will help you and your health in the long haul...I loss 3 teeth before I was 22 (56 now)...Just cause I was scared to see the dentist...Later I got 9 fillings and wonder what my fears cost me...Now my back teeth are giving me problems because of losing 2 back teeth and other teeth moved on me over the years....

I never let my fears stop me seeing any doctor now...I just tell them what my fears are an ask for help with them as they work on me...If I don't feel good with a doctor I don't let him near me...I'm human and he better treat me that way......

So...Don't hope they know, ask them questions and tell all the info you know about you ...You will not believe the big changes for the better in just the last 4 years in health issues and gear they now use...Sense 1993 till now I have been in the hospital for many issues and I have seen how much better they are now...

Good luck and it will be ok...

It is very common, don't fret about it.
I was 20 when mine were removed.
The dentist gave me a perscription that had three black pills.
Take one in the morning, one when I got there, one when I left.
I don't know what it was but, I sat in down in the chair and I remember the dentist slapping me on the face saying "wake up, wake up, you got to open your mouth"

I was out of it more than any drugs I had ever done. I heard music before they put headphones on me and the light show was fantastic.
I wished I had more wisdom teeth so I could score some more of that stuff.

This dentists drill had a series of pulleys and cables that turned the bit, not the high speed stuff they have today. I was wondering whether it was me or the nurse who would have to peddle to make the drill go.

I'm sure the dentist told you to be sure you take the antibiotics--before--the extractions.

Open holes in your mouth are the easiest way for bacteria to enter the bloodstream.

Depending how deep your roots are and how good your doc is, it'll be easy or it will be living hell. I got stuck with the hell part... dry socket and all. I'd rather smash my d*** with a hammer than do that again. Thankfully, its only a one-time deal, so don't sweat it.

Odd that you brought this up...

Mine are going to be coming out sometime this summer and, in fact, I have one that's already fractured and comes out in very very small pieces on occasion...

It is the WORSE got damn pain you will ever feel. You know how they say a man has no idea what it feels like to give birth, well let me tell you when they start yanking on the first tooth to rip it out of your mouth you WILL know what it is like to be on the edge of death.

Then since they are YANKING all 4 out you get to go through that pain 3 more times after the first one is done.

It looks like a damn battle field in the office once your done, all that blood everywhere, you would think you had lost a few gallons but don’t worry most good dentist will have a few pints standing by and ready to go.

Your dentist did ask what blood type you are right? If not find another because you don’t want to be in the middle of dieing of pain, bleeding to death to have him/her ask ”Opps, what blood type are you?” It’s too late then…

Did I tell you how much pain there is and how they basically stand on you to YANK them bad boys out? You would think by the feel of it that they were using a damn crowbar and hammer to KNOCK them loose…

Good luck man…

01 is right on the money! Did I mention that I was in the chair so long the pain meds & novacane (SP?) wore OFF! Oh yeah, and I was awake the whole time since I decided to eat breakfast that morning and the doc wouldn't knock me out.

Oh yeah, good times!!

Stop scaring him!

Just take the perscribed medications and you'll be fine.

Yes there is a lot of pain involved and yes I did give birth to a 12 pound baby(which I gave up for adoption) while I was in the chair but, you will get through it.

It takes a lot of pain to produce a baby in the dentists office when you're not pregnant and you're a man but, hey what can I say.

I had all 4 of mine done when I was about 25 or so. Dr. gave me a few shots in my mouth and yanked them out. It actually felt to me like he was pushing down on them, then the next thing I know I hear a "clink" on the metal tray. Three more clinks and I was walking out. I got a prescription for Vicodin, but didn't fill it until my roommate found out that I had it and he wanted to try. I didn't go to work the next day just because I had a good excuse not to, but I could have. Overall it wasn't a bad experience at all.
