I think it is kind of a stupid article and has those with itty bitty cars (Hondas etc.) thinking they will be better off in an accident. The author seems to think “most” accidents are with only one car.
That could be true but in my own “real world” experience the vast majority of accidents I have seen involved 2 or more vehicles, usually rear-end collisions.
To those that own the itty bitty Honda’s etc you won’t be feeling so happy should an F150 comes colliding into your rear end, nor should they feel happy should they collide into the rear of an F150.
Sorry but if I was in any accident that involved my F150 against some small itty bitty car I want to be the one in the F150 and I’ll be saying a pray for who ever is in that tin “return for deposit” economy box vehicle
I challenge the data this person provides for “deaths per million vehicles”. It very well could be correct but something tells me it was skewed for this persons personal results. The F150 has 110 driver deaths per million as compared to a Volkswagen Jetta’s 47 drivers deaths per million.
I would believe that if a million F150’s are hitting brick walls and a million Jetta’s are hitting 12” tall soft bushes…
I could be wrong but I hope my brakes don’t fail when barring down on a Jetta at a stop light because something tells me I will fair a lot better then the Jetta and its driver…

I agree with 01 XLT Sport. If you look at the picture of the f150 it is the model that has the half door in the rear, that has to reduce the structural integrity of the cab. I would rather be in any full size truck in an accident, not just the f150, especially when the accident involves a smaller vehicle.
Actually........In an offset, head on collision...with our Lightnings...we are dead meat. The whole darned cab will slide down the frame and squish us like we are in a trash compactor.
That was not the first study I have seen telling me this. It is fact gents....ya may want to think about your options of where you make impact if you are in a crash situation that allows you a second or so to steer one way or the other.
Rocks

The comparison is stupid.
From the NHTSA frontal crash results summary:
"CAUTION: Frontal crash test ratings cannot be compared across vehicle type and weight categories. This is because the kinetic energy involved in the frontal test depends on the speed and weight of the test vehicle, and the crash is more severe for heavier vehicles. Given equivalent frontal ratings for heavier and lighter vehicles, the heavier vehicle typically will offer better protection in real-world crashes."

I looked up the 2002 F-150 on the NHTSA Webs site.
Although the 2-dr, ext cab 4X2 got five out of five stars in all crashworthiness categories, except it got four stars for frontal driver protection.
read for yourself
And that bit about not being "nimble" enough to avoid a crash in the first place may be true for a stock 4X4 or Explorer, but it's not true for a Lightning, and it DAMN sure isn't true for MY Lightning.
The awful truth that the author is hiding from: Minis are teenie weenie little chick cars that I can throw in the back of my truck.

It's not a fair comparison.
There are way way way more F-150's out there than there are minis. So of course if you say 11,000 F150s were in wrecks that caused injury and only 100 Mini's were in wrecks that involved injury, it looks like the Mini is sooo much better.
He needs to compare PERCENTAGES (total number of F150s sold divided by number of F150s in wrekcs) for his comparison.
Gotta love statistics class :P
