Took the Hemi challenge today....

Well, after much prodding and harrassment by
a friend, I have agreed to race him in the 1/8
and 1/4 at a local strip. He has driven me
absolutely nuts over the last month by taking
every opportunity to extoll the virtues of his
hemi-powered dodge. I finally had enough
and agreed to a race at the end of this week.

I'm running a 2001 supercab 4x4 with 5.4
that has a K&N FIPK, Superchip tuning, and
a cat-back exhaust. But, I'm also running
Goodyear 305s on 17 inch wheels. Any predictions
on the outcome of this?

if his is a half ton, he'll prob win. I think he's got 80hp (stock) on ya.

Is he in a 4x4?

What size is his truck (extended cab? etc).
Are your Good Years ATs or street tires?

Your truck is already pretty heavy, esp since its a 4x4.

If his is a 4x2, I would probably say he has the advantage. Although, it also depends on your tuning.

Only on paper. Hemis only put down 250-260 to the wheels of the 345 they're rated at. Mod that 5.4 a little and it'll be a good race.

He's running a 4by as I am. And yes, my truck is an
extended cab. His tires are stockers and mine are
the MT/Rs. Should I put the stockers back on for
this little "event"?

I'm guessing the stock tires are smaller (not as tall) as the MT/R?
Then yes go back to stock, it will help in your overall gear ratio.

Yes, the MT/Rs are 305...which is taller than stock. I'll go
ahead and put the stock tires and wheels back on
tomorrow.

Forgot about my prediction....

You'll win the 1/8th and he'll reel you in on the 1/4.

I think the clear-cut winner in this face-off will be the marketing folks at Dodge that have somehow convinced people that 1/2 ton pickup trucks are in any way, shape or form measured by their quarter-mile performance.

I don't know how experienced you are at the track Trapper but, I've taken my truck many times and will offer some advice.

If your truck happens to pop a wheelie off the line, remember to hold the steering wheel as straight as you can because even though the front wheels only lose contact for a short time, turning the wheel will cause the truck to careen off to the left or right, not to mention you'd probably lose.

Also, an auto-deploy chute system is money well spent. I have come close to blacking out from the G's and not deploying the chute manually.
