That makes absolutely no sense at all, unless of course you are of the liberal background…

Hard - yes
Take a look at their lives. They are raised in total fear from a ruthless dictator, their opportunities consist of hoping they or close family members are not killed for no reason. They don't have dreams like us, opportunities like us, etc; unfortunately that makes them desperate for things. When it comes down to it, there is not much in their lives except for a few things, one of them being religion.
When you are desperate for things it changes everything. A few religious zealots teaching the masses to hate the westerners and that all non-believers must be killed, they tend to eat it up like Elizebeth Fisher at McDonalds because they crave meaning, something to look forward to, something to get them out of the hellhole their in, etc. And there the vicious cycle has started.
All of that conditioning has turned many into the mindset of a wild mistreated animal. Are all of them like that, no. But enough are to cause problems.
The problem we face is breaking the cycle. Some of them hate us, some of them only understand brutality and violence. It's breaking that cycle which is going to be difficult.
Those that hate us, we can either kill them all or get them to like us. The problem with killing them all is we turn into history, wiping out a race of people. That doesn't go over well with popularity, and we can't have the whole world hating us.
The problem with getting them to like us, or a better term would be to co-exist peacefully with us is that we cannot treat the same way Saddam did. If they only understand violence and brutality and we treat them that way, they will always fear and hate us. History shows that fear and hate will never rule forever. But we can't coddle them either. It creates a very thin line that we must walk.
Again, futile - no, hard -yes.
The other thing to remember with the radical types is this: Whenever an attack occurs, the attackers let everyone who supports them know what has happened. Then all the "friends" and/or people bribed to show up all go and "demonstrate" at the attack site. This makes a nice scene for the cameras. It a political ploy, the people you see in the pictures and footage are probably %75 of the total people who support the action. When it gets concerning to me is things like what you see out of the Palestinians. There you see tens of thousands out in the streets doing this crap.
