Gun carrying permit

I am assuming the states that allow people to carry handguns are fairly uniform...atleast as far as what they require. In Georgia, all you have to do it go to the court house, pay a fee, tell them why you want it and they process the permit. I am sure they will take just about any reason (short of, "Yeah, I want to get even with this SOB across the street that's been sleeping with my old lady.").

People have told me to tell them that I buy/sell/trade a lot of guns and don't want to wait for the background check each time. For the people who have these permits, what did you tell the courthouse?

Bring the United States Constitution with you, specifically the part with the 2nd amendment in it…

Just went to the couthouse here and filled out the paperwork. They require it to get a "Permit To Purchase" here in RTP NC. I was given 3 at one time and had it the same day due to 2 local police detective friends who signed off as references for me. This saved the short background check period of 5-7 days it usually takes. I believe they limit you to 3 or 5 purchase permits in 5 yrs in my township or it could be state. This is to carry it un-concealed only

I also have the CCW which is the concealed carry permit. It requires a class, safety course and range time with the class instructor to get the certificate.

I never had to tell them anything else than personal use and protection/target practice

In Florida if your over 21 and have it in a case that is not quickly accesible (on the seat next to you) you can carry it in your vehicle. If you want a concealed carry permit you have to take a course, pay a fee and then you get an ID card.

wow, that's all you have to do in GA and NC? Sounds like any jacka$$ can come in off the street and get a license to carry. Here in Texas you have to take an 8 hour handgun safety class, which includes a written test (most instructors go over the test verbatim right before you take it) and an accuracy test on the range. Then you have to send in your signed paperwork and test scores to the DPS, where they check your criminal history and decide to give you a concealed carry permit or not. Of course, you also have to send in about $100 to DPS for the paperwork fee.

In GA and NC, do they at least tell you where you can and can't carry?

They do give you guidelines as to where you can and can not carry. Public places ie:malls, schools, concerts etc are a big no. Most stores all have the no concealed weapons banners on them. Techinacally you can walk down the middle of the street with one holstered on but on the flip side if someone complains they can possibly charge you with some public terror law. The CCW permit does also require the classes on instruction here.

When I was in NY it took months to get one, lots of paperwork, fees, finger prints and etc. It may have changed by now to even stricter but it also made me realize how easy it was to acquire one here. If you have a clean record its pretty easy to acquire one and it makes it a little scary.......It is actually harder for the average person to get one here with the background checks than for me. I lucked out knowing numerous Police officers on local force and adjacent town ranging from street patrol to detective who have known me for years. The signed off as character reference and it made things much easier for me to obtain than the average Joe.. My wife even has gotten her permit even though she hates guns . Better to be registered and safety instructed than not if something would happen.

Pretty much the same here.

Yes...no churches, schools, blah, blah, blah. Basically, they don't want you carrying where you (or someone else) could harm others.

I know all too well what you mean. As my other post said I went through it when I lived in NY years ago. I also lived in Rochester or actually Fairport NY off Rt 31/250 near Wegmans. It takes months and months there and only a few days down here. They wouldnt even let you test fire at the ranges without a permit there years ago.

Off Topic: Hows the weather there right now? Making a trip there in a week or so hauling a car.....not looking for snow again.

it was sunny and in the 50's today and yesterday, really nice, but you never know! I really hate NY gun laws, honestly all for a freakin pistol, its not like I want an assault rifle (although I should be able to own one if I did...)

Gee all I got to do is strap it on, or stick the paddle holster behind my belt. I guess they figure if he can carry a badge he can carry a gun........anywhere.

It sounds like Texas and Arkansas have the same setup, class, range time, finger printing and background check. I also know that several states have agrements that allow permit holders of other states to carry in both states. I know that I can carry in Texas and Tennessee, I just have to follow their laws.

As of Sept. 12, 2003, permits to carry no longer required. If you can legally own a handgun you can carry it concealed. (Alaska)

Here on the Left Coast in (using best Arnold accent) Kelly - Forni- Yah you can't carry concealed. I think even the Mayor of LA tried to get a permit once and couldn't.

For Christ's sake we're a NON-SMOKING STATE...you're not even allowed to carry cigarettes here, let alone guns.....

Only the gang members and criminals carry guns.
