As long as both parties are agreeing to take and use the money it sounds like it would be legal. However, widespread use of any currency other than the US dollar would be bad for the dollar. It is basic supply and demand. If the demand for the US dollars falls off then they become less valuable, resulting in inflation. I wouldn't trust any private company to keep an adequate stock of precious metals on hand. If however the coin was made of precious metal then were talking a horse of a different color.

SUCH A DEAL!!!!!

Buy a 50 dollar coin for 75 dollars and then go out and spend it!!!!

I'm gonna start my own currency too and sell it to ***** for 50% more than face value.

Why didn't I think of this?!?!
