Rumsfeld is an egotistical SOB but, he ain't all bad, at least he has a sense of humor.
He said his favorite cartoon about the Iraq War shows him at the wheel of a car driving thru Iraq. In the back seat are a bunch of reporters and they are saying,
"Is it Vietnam yet?...Is it Vietnam yet?

That's pretty good.
BrewMaster--I was in Saudi as recently as 2000. I personally watched British and US planes leave the air base fully loaded and return empty. During the inbrief for the country it was passed on that this was not uncommon. The media didn't cover the bombings because they happened so often and there wasn't much to report. What would they say "We flew over and dropped a few bombs and we didn't lose any planes." I have a hard time believing the bombs just fell off the air planes. The other countries did not have as many troops at risk as these two countries which explains why the support from major countries like Russia, France, and Germany was nonexistant.
I also remember a rather impressive bombing campaign in 1998 called Desert Fox.
As recently as 2002, when I was released from the military, people who were stationed there were saying the planes were still carrying out these operations.
So if you really want to know the truth the area was not really at peace.
EDITED TO ADD:
The Iraqi's were shooting at our planes as they were enforcing the no-fly zones that they agreed to under the cease fire resolutions.
