They have one task and they don't know much about corporate PBX's and voice mail systems, etc. But, you take a guy like myself that worked for a small company for 7 years and you get 10 times more experience because you just have to learn everything involved with telecom...there's just nobody else to rely on. Works out well I think. It's helped me earn $40,000 more per year now than what I made in 1993. It was well worth the initial headaches of being the jack-of-all-trades phone dude.
You hit the nail on the head. I play with the company's PBX once in a while, and trained the current telecom person on its use (its surprising what one can learn in a weekend when under pressure to MAKE IT WORK).

It truly is amazing how much there is to learn when working as the computer guy in a small company; working with computer technology is only a small portion of the job. In the last 2 years I have worked enough 12-15 hour days that some people joke I should have a cot in the office - the company is currently doubling the size of my office and just authorized the purchase of 3 new servers and a core switch... just in case I feel like spending the rest of the night at the company, and want to have something to play with.

I am the R&D Manager at a rubber seals company. we make high performance seals for automotive, oil drilling, heavy duty (like Cat and Deere), aerospace, etc. I develop/invent new compunds to be used in all kinds of crazy places. I developed a new fluorocarbon compound that is used in our beloved F-150s as a seal in the fuel line quick connects from the gas tank to the engine. We also make seals that go in the F-150 engines, though not sure whhere (I think in the fuel injectors, but not 100% sure). I LOVE my job. I'm a chemist by degree. I still do a lot of chemistry.

Your 2nd post... and I fear you will soon overtake my naive post to identify the 'age survey' post of months ago! 8786 views, 270 replies... I'm gonna strap myself in to ride this thread - great idea!

First off - my hat is off to you military folks. God bless you all, your contribution, for the sake of all Americans, is respectfully appreciated. And, you computer guys... well, I still type with 4 fingers...

Me? Banker for 13 years. F/I consultant for a major domestic auto manufacturer for 9 years. Now, a professional home inspector, and a certified FEMA disaster housing inspector.
