*Not L related* Making more HP with more octane?
*Not L related* Making more HP with more octane?
I know for a fact that you do NOT get any power from increasing octane on a stock engine. I am trying to prove a friend wrong because he thinks that his 72 buick GS will have more HP if he uses 91 ocatane. He thinks only an octane increase will increase HP. Anyone have a link to an article proving or mentioning something to this extent on the web. He also has his heart set on that NASCAR runs 91 octane. So he thinks that his car could make 750 HP with not turbo, supercharger, or NOS with 91 octane with just motor. I almost killed my self after I fell of the table laughing so hard. He said to make power "It's all in the heads." I am like too bad theres nothing going for you in your head. I am done now. Its just a knowledge competition.
I forsee a long conversation regarding the higher the octane the more timing you can have.
A higher octane will allow you to advance the timing a little.
the higher octane rating means (in layman terms) that the flash point is higher, thus you can have more compression without worry of detonation. Whereas a stock engine might fire the spark plug before TDC of hte piston, with a higher octane, you can get closer to TDC of hte piston.
So in theory, a higher octane can give you more power if you advance the timing a little. but just filling up your gas tank is like throwing money to the wind, you won't experience any gains. you would have to advance the timing a little.
EXAMPLE
the race side of my chip requires 100 octane, and the only difference is the timing, it is advanced a little bit.
the higher octane will allow more compression before its flash point

btw:
back int he 60-70's Pontiac 350's were different than Chevy 350's. the pontiacs were notorious for spitting in the middle, where the chevy's had more steel to prevent spilting..
I think Buick used a pontiac block. thus 750hp will result in the block splitting doen the middle.
If it were a chevy, perhaps it could hold up.
to get 750 hp will take serious coin.

I think Menace answered everything according to power vs. octane. That's why chips are tuned to higher octanes, so they can advance their timings.
But as for Nascar running 91 octane, HA! I get 93 octane from BP around here. Nascar has special "race gas" and (if my poor memory serves me correctly) it is around 104-110 octane and stays very cold. I can, reguardless of my memory, say for a fact that NASCAR does NOT run 91 octane. It's a special gas that is NOT at any Chevron. That's why the minivan that someone will also pump full of 91 octane will make very short of 750 HP. Race gas is more expensive per gallon and is normally only at race tracks.
Just make a large wager that he can run an extra 500 HP by spending an extra 2 bucks a tank and make bank

octane alone actually decreases power in perfect conditions. The flame front will be too slow for the stock timing. Octane rating is only one thing, one thing only. Knock retardation. Thats it.

The 1972 Buick GS was a cool car...... in 1972
Did your friend ride the "short" bus to school ?
I had a 1970 GS with a 455 and turbo 400. Quick for a big boat, but not real exciting compared to what is offered nowadays.
750 horsepower ? Maybe while daydreaming while riding that short bus to school.
