Possible beater car... Opinions?
Possible beater car... Opinions?
I've had been thinking about buying something cheap and front drive. We don't get much bad winter weather here, but enough that I don't like taking my truck out. Besides a small car will get much better fuel economy. A buddy of mine (Ford salesman actually) has found a '90 Prelude - 5speed, red with black interior and sun roof. Says it's in good shape, but "might" need a clutch. He's just going off the guys word, and hasn't seen it yet... The guy wants to replace the clutch (which he says he can have done for $200), and sell it for $1000. I said if the car's in good shape, let me do the clutch, and I might give $700.
What do you guys think? I talked to a friend that had one just like it a few years back, and he really liked it. I just really miss my Eclipse, or any small 5speed for that matter. I love my truck, but I just really have been aching to go cruise the hilly back roads in a small 5speed... plus I can probably cut my monthly fuel costs almost in half (assuming I drive it daily and can use 87 octane), and teach my GF to drive a 5speed before I replace the clutch...
am I just trying to sell myself on something I don't need? The Kelley Blue Book on it (private party) is something like $2000 depending on specific options and condition (neither of which I know yet), so even if it didn't work out I should be able to at least get my money back... right?
This would make 4 vehicles for me... I was thinking maybe I should wait, and see what I decide to do with the NY'er. I plan on showing it, and trying to sell it at some shows this summer... but... I just don't really know what I want to do...

winter is almost over, why bother with a winter beater, besides trucks are made for winter.
i wouldn't buy the car if i was you, especially not if it's number 4. if you have 3 vehicles that you can't drive during winter i would think some of them should go.
i can see having one ride that is very clean or special somehow that you won't drive in winter but not three.
just my opinion though, you did ask.

Well, my truck doesn't do too bad in winter, but being rear drive, and light (flareside) it's no match for a front drive or 4x4, and I can't stand the thought of some idiot sliding into me... It gets about 17/18 in mixed driving...
Then I have my Belvedere which is a project in the works, and will never be out in bad weather when it is done (that's pronounced, "When I win the lottery")
Next is my '69 New Yorker. I originally bought it for the engine/tranny, but it's too nice to scrap. I probably won't hang on to it past this summer...
So, really the Prelude would be a toy, get good fuel economy, be there when I don't want to take my truck somewhere and keep miles off my truck (got 17k in one year... Dang! I just realized my truck will be a year old in a few days)
BTW, yes, thanks for the opinion...

some weight in the bed and good snow tires and no snow will stop you.
As far as other drivers sliding in to you, that will happen either way and would you rather turn your head and look at the licence plate or the soccer mom's eyes when the Excursion comes plowing in? I personally would not want to be in a Prelude in the winter being hit by an SUV. Something about being eye level with the front bumper doesn't sit well.
