"The Tip Jar"
"The Tip Jar"
There's a ill-mannered trend I see taking place lately and it involves "the tip glass"
Not long ago we had a lengthy debate on "tipping", and there's some situations that warrant giving a tip, and there's situations where it's utterly ridiculous to leave a tip..
A good buddy of mine owns a take-out only type of restaurant.
Lately he's done something that rubs me the wrong way, and I can't get over how ill-bred and uncouth of a practice it is.
He takes a large wine glass, puts some loose change, and a $5 bill into it before he opens the doors, and places the glass next to the cash register.
Some nights when I am there visiting, I watch the stupid people in amazement as one by one they make their donation as they pay for their order.
I told my friend I thought it was a cheesy thing to do, but he said "look, I pick up between $40-$60 a night for free, when you multiply that x 365, we are not talking nickels and dimes anymore."
I've also noticed the "tip glass" lately at the cashier at the off-track betting place, and a few other business that you would never tip at.
What's next? The teller where I bank will have one too, and expect a tip when I go to make my Visa payment? That's what it's coming to.
As far as I'm concerned, it's a tasteless and cheap practice, it's almost like begging.
Regardless of how uncool it is, the zombies of the world will perpetuate a bad practice.

Both my kids have worked in the "service industry"
during and after college. There is a "tip jar" practice where they have worked as well, but it's not the type you mention. In their cases, the jars served to collect tips from all employees. The tips are then subdivided evenly based on hours worked that day. It seems to promote employees working together for the benefit of the customers. At least that's the theory. It also helps keeps the restaurant on the up-and-up with the IRS.
I agree that an owner doing it simply for personal profit is a cheesy deal. Customers might believe they are helping the employees who generally make 1/3 the minimum wage.

I am with you on this Habibi about the cheap basturds leaving a stupid tip jar/glass when there is absolutely no reason for one.
There is a place I go to that has pizzas and subs etc. They don’t deliver so you have to go and pick it up. No problem its really good food so I don’t mind going to pick it up. Now mind you if they delivered the driver would get a tip.
However this place about a month ago starting sitting a stupid tip glass out by the register. You can eat inside if you wish and so long as they “serve” me during my visit I would leave a tip on the table for the person serving me. If no one serves me at my table fluck them they ain’t getting no damn tip.
I was in line one night and a gentleman asked them about their tip glass, god bless his heart he was just like me. Anyhow he asked them about it and they stated “if customers like are food then we feel a tip is in order”
This guy without missing a beat replied ”Ahhhhh NO!, if customers like your food they will return to buy again, and if your food taste like crap they won’t and will let all their friends know as well, so why don’t you get rid of that stupid tip glass since you charge plenty enough money for your food already, man you people are greedy basturds” Of course I had to voice that I agreed with him…

No one is forced to put money in.
Look, I hold doors open for ladies, pull out their chair for them, say 'Yes Ma'am' and 'No Ma'am'
and I also happen to wear a tip jar around my neck, it's no big deal. This is the 21st century, get with the times people.
p.s.
(If anyone feels the need to tip that particular post I will provide my paypal account.)

I disagree with your views on tipping at casual dining places.
I was at a Burger King in central Florida over the weekend, and the service was so prompt and courteous I slipped a dollar in the employee's Speedo.

Bad idea. That extra money will just go to additional body piercings.

Funny you mention that story Burt, because someone once asked my friend about it and he said the same thing "if you like the food, feel free to leave a tip"
Well, the food is overpriced (you pay dearly to eat there)
There is no service because it's all "take home"
In a way, I think my friend is smart to take advantage off all the clueless people, and line his pockets with their stupidity.
I saw a woman one night pick up her big order ($61.00), then she drops 9 bucks into the tip glass and walks out with a smile.
My friend looks at me, gives me the big wink, and rubs his hands together. haha, you gotta love it.

You didn't really think that the head gets pierced clear thru did you?
The 'Prince Raoul' ring is actually functional. Let's say you're at a party, it's very crowded and you just want to hang around. It will get you up above the action so you can see what's going on.
Just try to remain as inconspicuous as possible or your friends will try to make you into a pinata.
It is definately a trend going on in the pizza and sandwich shop industry. It seems that every pizza shop I go into anymore has one of these stupid tip jars. I do a lot of things on pricipal, and one of them is to let the owner know that I will no longer be patronizing his business until he gets rid of the tip jar. Not only will I no longer eat there, but I will be sure to tell all my friends not to eat there either. Soon, he will need the tip jar just to stay in business.
