I don't hate what I don't know.
I would like my future laptop to be compatable with my dell desktop. I've got a dimension 8100and I love it.

Can I swap files back and forth between a mac and a dell?
I don't want no fancy software to be able to do it either.

Files as in software, probably not, but I'm no computer guru. I don't seem to have trouble sending and receiving pics, sound files and those types of things from other computers, though. You'd have to speak with a real tech to find that out. I'm just an end user.,,,,98

me too, I'm a "point and click' kind of guy.
You should see me in action, index finger extended on each hand, and "peck, peck, peckety, peck, peck.

When I run into a problem I just call a computer friend, or post my question online.

Thumbs up

I know what you mean...My wife is still amazed to see how fast I can type with 3 or 4 fingers I am counting my left thumb as a finger, it hits the space bar. Right thumb works the trackpad button.,,,,98

Don't even get me near a mouse, I have to circle something ten times before I land on it. Hand me a trackpad, and I'll zip alll over the screen like a madman, hehe.

Check this out...
You can get notebooks more better equipped, but look at the size and the weight, that's cool!

Habibi, My wife has a Dell desktop and laptop at work. Even with the laptop, she gets tired of lugging it back and forth from work to the house. She sends files from Microsoft Office to our home via email. I have Office installed on our Mac and we haven't had any problems with the two being compatible. She amends files, and sends them back to the office no problem.
BUT, if I was going to buy a new laptop and wanted it to be compatible with my existing desktop, I would buy that particular operating system.

If you do happen to get a Mac of any type, disregard IE entirely, and go for Netscape 7.0+ It's faster, can view multiple pages on one window via tabs, and just plain works better on a Mac. What I found particularly annoying about IE, was that pics would stop loading if you scrolled the page. That's not an issue on Netscape. IE could also not upload pics to certain sites(including this one), and Netscape can. I still kept the IE icon in case of emergencies, but I have not used it in months.
I have also heard a rumor that Mac would no longer use IE at all soon, in favor of their own browser, Safari. I hope they fix the bugs in it though. I hit a link on it the first day I tried it, and it downloaded forty+ copies of the same exe file while I was away from the computer. Not fun. It was d/l'ing them as fast as I could trash them. Finally ended up trashing the whole browser to stop it.Every time I started the browser up, it would go right back to d/l the same thing. Quite annoying in my book. Even clearing the history and cookies didn't work,,,,98

Is it Mac only, or have a Mac specific d/l? I only saw one d/l option. Unless the Mirror d/l is the Mac version?,,,,98

Habibi as dumb as you are with computers, you might want to stick with a Windows based laptop. They do however have programs out for mac that will work with windows programs.

Like Mac Office, it will read Win Office files. For convenience sakes, just go with a Windows computer.

This is by no means a commercial for Dell. However, please do not pay any attention to ANYONE who claims ANY PC is a piece of junk because of error messages or having to reboot too much. Their problems stem from faulty operating systems or software 95% of the time.

I will give you an example. My wife has a 3 yr old 800 Mhz Dell desktop that was originally built with WIN ME installed. I constantly had to reboot the machine everyday because of error messages and freezes. Not only that, but I had to reboot my broadband modem too for some reason that I never could figure out, and I am a so-called "computer dude." Since then I have done a clean install of WIN XP Pro, and I have had NOOOOOO problems whatsoever. The only time I reboot is when I install the abundant patches supplied by Microcrap.

Another example, my grandparents just bought a new Dell and had problems with it from day one. They were complaining that it kept giving "error" messages. They were on the phone with Dell daily complaining about all their problems. My grandfather even said he was going to sue them to get his money back. I went down to help, and I replaced the damaged internal modem, and updated their crappy dialup ISP software, and they since have had NOOOO problems.

So my advice to anyone with "troubled" pcs is do not take it to a "shop" to get it fixed. Try to find a local "computer dude" or a tech savy friend to look at it. Most problems today with computers deal with software and not the pc at all.

Habibi,

My wife and I just bought a new Dell Inspiron for $799.00. Now granted, it does not have all the bells and whistles, but it does have a DVD/CD burner. The only complaint I have is that it has XP home edition installed and does not have all the administration features that Pro has. Again, we have NOOOO problems with this laptop as well.
