Re: The conceited Empire?

The power and influence of the United States is being overestimated, claims French historian and demographer Emmanuel Todd. "There will be no American Empire." "The world is too large and dynamic to be controlled by one power." According to Todd, whose 1976 book predicted the fall of the Soviet Union, there is no question: the decline of America the Superpower has already begun.
His premise is flawed from the beginning by assuming that there is a push for an American Empire to start with. Many Europeans view us through the lens of their own history. How, many times over the lifetime of the USA, have we proved that world domination is not our goal. We allowed the UN and Europe to deal with Iraq and terrorism as they saw fit, even though we didn't agree with their methods.

When terrorism targeted us at home. We said move over and give us the reigns. When we get the wagon to where it needs to be, we'll once again hand back the reigns. That's what we've always done and that's what we'll always do. This guy doesn't know what he's talking about. He doesn't have the perspective to make predictions about our future as a nation. He probably doesn't even realize that France's political power in the world was a gift, more than a right, at the end of WWII. Their relevence is questionable at best.

Well I would say there were some good points made in the article in regards to economies and trade deficits. However the major flaw lays in his premise that it is countries economical structures that will maintain them as a counter measure from a superpower or to raise them to the same stature as a superpower without a strong military to back up their economy. You can not have one without the other, they go hand in hand.

Old Europe is just that, it is old, reclusive and outdated. There will never be a united Europe, as much as France and Germany may wish it will never come to pass. Old Europe is too caught up in socialist agendas and the price tag that comes along with it. Thus they will never be a counterweight to true superpowers like America and England.

They neither have the cash flow to support their socialist agendas at home or any type of military to fend off an aggressive country, or more specifically, radial groups such as terrorist from taking hold in their homelands and changing the society’s outcome which in turn could dictate any future economy they may have.

When you get right down to it America is one of the fewest countries in the position of correcting its ill policies, such as dependency on foreign imports, specifically oil. It is mainly because of some of Europe type socialist programs practiced here in America that America is more dependant on foreign oil. Let’s not forget we have some left wing socialist groups now trying to make some dirt endangered.

Europe, old Europe’s strong outcry against the war on Iraq is for its very dependence on lucrative contracts with Middle East countries for oil imports and technical exports, as well as to help sustain their failing socialist programs. Let’s not forget it is such countries from old Europe like France that was supplying Iraq with knowledge for some of their WMD programs.

It is like someone addicted to drugs, they need it and will do what ever it is to get it. Old Europe is addicted to its socialist programs and will do what ever it takes to continue them even if it means there own demise.

It is for that very reason that in many circles in old Europe they continue to wish that America remains the mighty superpower we are, because it is America they call on for their protection.

When there is no police on the street to keep the community civil it will be the strongest that “dictate” how the community will operate, not the majority.

This gentleman’s article is very flawed because he is so blinded by socialist programs and propaganda that he can not see reality and how the world operates in reality. These are the same flaws that lead to the USSR, East Germany and France’s demise. France is no longer a player on the world stage, they are simple a bystander yelling for attention and hoping to maintain their countries socialist programs, however at this time their “supplier” Saddam is no longer selling them their fix and they are having bad withdrawals…
