my political science professor here at school noted that he wants to do away with special interest groups, I don't remember him saying that, but it will never happen. In my opinion he may help California in some ways, but may be a loss in many other ways.
Your professor doesn’t sound too bright if he indeed would like to do away with special interest groups. Perhaps he means “special interest group’s money to elected officials”?
The only reason we have elected officials in any government, local, state and federal is because of special interest groups. Elected officials represent us and we're all in different groups of interest.
The phrase “special interest group” gets thrown around so much and many people tie it to big business. In fact some of the biggest special interest groups have nothing to do with big business, per say like Enron, Intel, IBM etc.
The ACLU is a special interest group, the NAACP is a special interest group, senior citizens have a special interest group, farmers have a special interest group, The Rainbow Coalition ran by Jesse Jackson is a special interest group.
The are huge special interest groups on both sides of the isle of republicans, democrats, independents and the list goes on…
What you should ask your professor is “which” special interest groups would he like to get rid of? Once they are all gone there will be no reason for elected officials except a few. We won’t need state governments, just a Governor that can decide what is best for his/her state.
We won’t need federal elected officials like senators and congressmen. We will only need the President and his/her cabinet to decide what the country needs.
I do agree we need to curb, or somehow get the big money out of special interest groups so it is the voice of the people that gets heard and determines the path of the future and not the money…

Here's what I have to say:
Actors should stick to acting, Politicians should stick to politics. You just can't take someone seriously in an authoritative position if they were an actor. It just doesn't seem professional.
