The Point of Hunting
SPROCKET_X
I can agree to that to a point, I don't hunt to survive, I have a good job and can afford to buy food. But I love deer and wild game. Not because it is a sport to me, but because I was raised on it and I love the taste. I don't have to hunt to stay alive. But for me it is a way of life.

Ya I can understand....sometimes us city folk don't get the full aspect of things...I mean I've only seen a deer 2 times in the wild and that was when I was on vacation in Washington.
My grandfather is a trophy hunter. He has bagged many deer in southern Illinois. Yes he is thinning out the heards which has to be done as they are over populated. The state used to hire a guy that went out and thinned out the herds to cut down on the population. I do agree with trophy hunting. We are at the top of the food chain for a reason. I don't agree with the large fenced in farms that allow hunters. There's no sport in that.
Well let's see here:
I am a member of the NRA
I work in the environmental field
I don't heard goats, but do have a few head of cattle
I don't live in KY, but my Mom is, and I still have a lot of family down there
and I have hunted some, but not much
however, I am most likely going to increase my hunting in the near future. I use to think I had better things to do w/ my time instead of climb a tree, freeze my butt off, and hope deer walks by - that was before a deer jumped out in front of me at night while I was on the interstate. Needless to say the car was totalled - luckily neither myself or my then pregnant wife were injured. The meat will help feed my carniverous ways - not my ego. But a large buck mounted on my wall wouldn't hurt me ego, either.
oh yeah, I'm also a member of a conservation club.

My grandfathers brother is/was a trophy hunter. When I was little I was always excited about going to his house to see the different stuffed animals all over. I thought it was the greatest thing. Now, I don't agree with as much. But still it's his choice, his hobby/sport.
My grandfather and uncle(s) went/go hunting for the food being #1 and the sport being #2. And theres nothing like freshly killed meat. Screw the store bought stuff
There is nothing wrong with hunting, I am a Carnivore BABY! I love a big fat, juicy, succulent, think, hot dripping steak. Burgers, venison, goose, I love sinking my teeth into the tasty flesh of all those yummy creatures. Why should I be critisized (<--SP) for that? Who cares if they butcher or slaughter the cow I eat for a McBurger, or I go out and bag me a Turkey. How else does one get live game by another means than hunting?
Yes, I think most people on this board have common sense and would certainly agree that killing for 'power' reasons is probably a sign of dementia. But, the mere idea of hunting itself? Lions hunt, along with a huge list of other creatures. My guess is that when a rifle slug goes flying through a deer, it is much more humane than the gazelle being eviserated by the cheetah and dying a slow death while being eaten alive.

Boy I'd like to go hunting again. I haven't been in years. My Dad used to take me squirrel hunting when I was about 10 or 11 years old. He's skin em' and fry em' up. I can still remember the first time I shot a 20 gauge. I remember looking up in the trees and seeing those limbs shaking. And those little sqwackers running everywhere. Those are some memorable moments in my life. I'd like to try Turkey hunting one of these days. There's nothing wrong with hunting for the sport, if the people who do hunt for the sport take reponsibility and eat what they kill. I will not kill an animal just for the heck of it. That's just plain stupid. There are people that think hunting is wrong, but those same people are the ones who eat a big Turkey every Thanksgiving and Christmas for dinner. Now tell me the difference between going to the grocery store to get your meats, and going out in the wild and getting it? Either way, you've earned what what you got. Whether it be from a meat deptartment at Kroger's, or from going out one cold early morning and waiting on that big Gobbler to strut your way. One way or the other, that animal ends up on your table when it's time to eat. And the one who pulled the trigger (the hunter) is the one who made that possible for you. So tell me, what's wrong with that?
You all have opinions that would be hard to sway on this subject. I personally have only hunted one time in my life. I spent a year hunting North Vietnamese and Vietcong. I didn't hunt them for sport, or to stock the freezer. I have nothing against hunting or hunters, I feel it is a viable sport that provides a product to the sportsman. I'm against hunting for the sake of numbers of kills, but someone who genuinely trys to hunt and eat the game has my blessing. (Not that they need it.) I enjoy a good Venison steak or better than that a barbeque. I've eaten wild rabbit, I prefer farm raised. I'm not interested in eating game birds, not enough meat for the effort.
The point is, it's licensed and legal, and people get great joy and relaxation from it, so enjoy you opinions, but remember they are just that, opinions, and you know what they say about opinions........ mine included.

I don't really buy it. I think it's a ****ty way for people to exert power over something else. One thing I know for certain is that the last thing people are thinking of when they shoot their rifle is "I care about the environment."
What's your opinion?

Let me also state that even though I am not a hunter I am a PRO-GUN which is the same as PRO-FREEDOM, that is what the second amendment is all about, freedom and keeping the government in check or “keeping the balance” anyone who tells you different has their head way up their butt…
I also have absolutely no problem with those that hunt because they perform a very useful service and very humane service to nature herself. You see if there was no hunting say for deer then they would over populated and many would starve to death. So I ask which is more humane, kill them quickly and feed someone or let them starve to death over a long period of time?
You really need to educate yourself about a position before you take one. You have not done so and thus your post is illogical and not practical. In my opinion you sound like a liberal environmental wacko who states things that sound good and make you feel good without knowing what you just said but since your friends and family think its good you go with it. In other words you are a follower and will never be a leader.
To hunt or not to hunt has nothing to do with “not caring for the environment” Someone could care deeply about the environment and still be a hunter. It has no ties what so ever to the “environment”. So there is your first education and something you can walk away with so when you state something as illogical as you did to someone else you may meet they won’t think you’re a complete idiot.
At least be thankful for those of us like me who strongly support our second amendment right, for without it you have NO freedom…
EDIT: Due to my good friend 36fan...

I really dont mind if people hunt, its just not my thing. However, I do enjoy owning and shooting firearms. In my opinion, Hunting humans is a far better sport, or give the deer a weapon and let it fire back at you. Now that would justify hunting in my mind. Thats the great thing about america, we can disagree and no one gets thier pinky toe cut off.
I got a 10 point buck once, the night before season opened.
I got him with my Merc Sable though, does that count?
It was my own fault, if I wasnt the last one into work, and the first one out, someone else would've clipped him.
Seriously, I'm not a hunter, nor will I ever be.
Grocery store serves all my needs well, and I don't have to stare my dinner in the eye before I kill it.
A few of my friends hunt, but I'll tell you, I see it mostly as an excuse for these guys to get away from their wives for a week, drink their faces off, and party for a week.
I also don't have any issues with people hunting who are following the laws, different strokes for different folks, if killing your own food makes you feel good, then it's not my job to judge you, just as I don't want to be judged.
Pointing at the lobster in the tank and telling the waiter "I'll take him" gives me a sense of what it's like though.
The only thing that bugs me, is when my friends come back from hunting, and they start talking about how tough and manly they were, you know the whole macho thing, that's when I'll chime in and say "uhuh, you really are a badass for the way you waited in the tree for 3 hours, and then shot the deer with your scoped high power rifle, yoiu're the man!
That gets em pissed off, but who cares, they deserve it for talking the talk anyway, lol
Conclusion?
If you want to hunt, go ahead, follow the rules, try not to get to drunk and shoot your friends (or yourself)
If you don't want to hunt, then go to the grocery store like me.
Yes, I will state the obvious, killing just for the sake of killing is stupid, and for the minority of people who do that, they deserve a beating.

Every year we go eeer hunting/camping for the entire Rifle season (About 9 days) and yes its truly an excuse for us to get away from the wives/gf's, drink ourselves silly eat the foods the wives/gf's dont approve of and just to get away from the job/city. It nice to be outside of mobile phone coverage and so far up in the mountains you never see another person. We actually get little hunting in but usually one of us gets a deer or 2 every year. For the ones that dont approve of hunting of deer you really should go talk to your local Department of Wildlife conservation and let them explain how its all about wildlife population control. If hunters werent killing them, then innocent motorists would be hitting more of them. Ive hit 2 in my life and one totaled my car and caused me to clip head on traffic.
I just have to reply on this
I hunt (could you tell) each and everyday of the hunting season.
I hunt for deer, turkey etc.. I use a shotgun, bow, muzzleloader.I would use just a knife if they let me. Here in N.Y. state you can take up to 4 deer. I don't take 4 most times i hunt only what i need and if i do go out for more game we have a deer donation plan in N.Y. in which you can donate any killed deer to the homeless shelters through out the state.
We have no less than 1.2 million deer here that is 3Xs the population of buffalo, ny. We also have over 850,000 hunters with a sucess rate of 15-20%. (due to using shotguns, bows and muzzleloaders).
Imagine if you will no hunting for lets say 5 years and with does of about 700.000 that would be ~1.4 million deer more each year(deer most often have two fawns) The next year the offspring would also breed bring the rate past 4 million deer. Do the math here, you can see where this is going in a matter of a couple years there would be starvation, illnesses, cwd, car/deer Collisions. Deer in N.Y. state do not have many natural Predators. (some coyotes) So we need to be responsible and cull the herd on a yearly basis. I hunt to be with my life long friends and yes we drink, talk *****, leave all the worlds worries behind for 5 days a year. Isn't it called male bonding!!!! (without touching) relax and have a beer. I have the god given right to hunt, I hunted for my country for 3 years now i hunt for myself.
Oyea one more thing its my birthday today!! that means only 3 more weeks until bow season....-////----------->
