ranting around

Well folks, it's happening again.

My Youngest son brings home a questionnaire/application from his elementary school.
Everyone that is in the school buildings must fill out a volunteer form that
gives the school system the right to do a complete background check on that
individual before allowing them in the building._ They want lots of
information, just a sample of which is:

Social Security number
Every state you've ever lived in other than North Carolina
A list of every employer you've ever had
If you've ever been convicted of or plead guilty to a crime, even
traffic violations
three references, names, addresses, telephone numbers and places of
business

It was two pages long, front and back.

You know what, that's great, and I want my child protected when he goes
to school, and while he's there.... BUT
I don't care if I'm a convicted child molester._ If I have CUSTODY of my
child and the school tells me I can't enter the school grounds to see my
child, we're gonna fight._ If I've got custody and they have my kid there
for classes, then by God I'll be there when I want to be, try and stop
me._ Bottom line is that I don't like granting those rights, but they ARE the
parents rights._ They might make me feel uncomfortable, but they are
still the parents rights._ Some of the solution to the problem is not to let
parents tudor someone else's child alone at any time._ You can't have
the best of both worlds, if you want volunteers to lighten the load, spread
the teaching skills, allowing small group instruction, then give the parents some credit, don't make them feel like criminals._ I resent being asked to
undergo a background check after spending 30 years in the public schools
teaching and working with students, teachers and administrators.
Sure, like My wife says, stop making waves, it's for the good of all to
submit to the checks._
NO, it ain't for the good of all, it's another little, itsy bitsy piece of our individual rights and freedoms that we are passively giving away.

Case in point:

New cars and trucks coming equipped with a tiny recorder that
re-cycles every thirty seconds._ It records your vital controls of that
vehicle, brakes, speed, gear, etc._ In the event of an accident it can
be removed without your knowledge and used to determine the cause or fault of the accident._ Useful, very possibly, but it has Big Brother, George
Orwell, 1984_ written all over it.

Red light cameras._ You pass through a red light that's equipped with
one of these cameras, and you get a traffic citation that carries a pretty
hefty fine._ Do they take a picture of you driving, NO._ They take a picture
of your license plate and based on that info. only, you are required by law
to pay the fine.
While riding my bike, a motorist throws a two foot length of 2x4 at me,
narrowly missing my head, bounces off my rear wheel and into the ditch
on the shoulder of the road._ I get the license tag number and call the
police. Their reply, "Did you get a positive ID on the driver?"_ Me, "No I
didn't, but this is the license of the vehicle."_ Officer, "Doesn't matter,
there's nothing we can do if you can't ID the driver, he can say he wasn't
driving the car."
SO HOW THE HELL CAN THEY FINE YOU FOR GOING THROUGH A RED LIGHT IF THEY CAN'T ID THE PERSON DRIVING?
Rights, and personal responsibility._ We are giving up, (quite passively
I might add) more personal freedoms and rights everyday._ At the same time
people are assuming less and less personal responsibility everyday.
Filing suit against Bars for serving too much alcohol to a driver._ Filing suit
again Coffee houses for making the coffee too hot and it spilled on
their laps._ Filing suit against companies for tires that blowout when the
vehicle skids in an avoidance maneuver._ All those people, through POOR JUDGMENT on THEIR part, got themselves in a situation that involved bodily injury, then tried to blame someone else for their poor judgment in the first place.

Oh, man, don't get me started._ Ah, er,_ sorry, I was already started,
you had nothing to do with it._ There I go trying to misdirect blame._ I
accept responsibility for my own anger and control thereof.

People should not be allowed to retire with an ounce of brains left in
their heads, this is the result._ You have the time to think about what you
usually do without thinking because you normally don't have time to
think about it because you're too busy trying to get to work and get those
problems solved so you can get that check on the thirtieth and keep the
wolf off your back.
Yeah, what I said.....did that last little bit of a thought confuse you as
much as it did me? Maybe we worked out that brain thing just right with me.....

okay, I'm off riding my bike and being the general drain on the economy
that I relish.

what does the school system do w/ the background checks? What's the point? Ok, you have custody of your child, but you can't see him/her while they are school - uh, yeah that makes sense...

and for the cameras at traffic lights, people have gotten out of the tickets because they proved the timing of the cameras were off- but this is my problem w/ the cameras - the 6th Ammendment of the Consitution of the United States says that you have right to face your accuser, so bring the camera to court and lets hear what it has to say!
