Direct TV

We've had Direct TV for about 4 years. We moved from Maryland to Ohio a few months back, and all I had to do was pack up the receivers. Direct TV guy came out to our house and installed a brand-spankin new dish - we asked for the Hi-Def dish because we have 2 HDTVs. And they ran an additional cable into our bedroom - so now we have 3 tvs set up for Direct TV... oh, did I mention it didn't cost anything to have it installed at our new house? It was also a custom installation because we had it mounted on a 5 foot pole in our yard and ran the cable about 6" underground... again, the Direct TV dude did all of this for FREE.

NFL Sunday Ticket is the BOMB! We order it each year. Some of the games will be broadcast in hi-def... I'm siked!

Speaking of Hi-def... get it if you can find it cheap. We have a 65" mistubishi diamond - built in hi-def receiver, and a Hitachi 43" something-or-other but have a Hi-def Direct TV receiver - and can pull regular hi-def programming off the air. It's really cool. Killer picture.

I have had Dish for almost three years and would highly recommend it to anyone. No experience with DirecTV. However...

When I was shopping these two (agree with all, cable sucks), I found this basic premise:

- DirecTV is for sports fans, hands down.
- Dish Network is for family programming and movie buffs.

Since I fit the Dish mold, that's where I went. Good luck!!

I haven't seen anybody talk about it here, but I believe both Dish and DTV have internet hook ups. I've seen ads where you can get like 800kbs each way now. I knew a guy that had satelite internet that had 4Mbs down stream, but it was one of those that you had to dial into. If I remember correctly the satelite internet is not much more than cable now, maybe they have a deal when you get TV and internet together.

Personally I've stuck with cable. Not a big sports fan so I don't care about that stuff. Here with Brighthouse(time warner) we can get just about everything Satelite has. The cable modem rocks 2Mbs down and 425Kbs up. I can't stand dial up any more. :o

VG,

Yeah, Directv has an agreement with Earthlink but, you have to sacrifice your first born, give up your left ********, and donate 7/8th of your total blood to get it installed and operational. Not to mention that it costs your other ******** and 4.5 toes.

There something fishy about this. Lmao

Well with that being said. I have had dishnetwork for about a year. Then I got directv and had the dishnetwork taken out. Directv is a better service. You can get hdtv or tivo on directv just like dishnetwork. It really is a great service. I also have direcpc one way satellite with aol. I get 400 kbps download and dialup upload. No fair access policy... Also it is only $44 dollars a month.

The only downside I can see by going with DirecTV is that you have to pay for Tivo. On Dish, it's free.

I also agree with everyone on the Internet access. I have a cable modem and wouldn't trade it for love or money. I tried DSL for a month, and it totally sucked. SBC has the worst, most ignorant customer service I have ever experienced. My cable modem (Time Warner) is faster, albeit more expensive. I pay $55 per month.

Yeah, I doubt I go with Tivo for the time being but, I'm glad to know I have it as an option...

Wouldn't yell that too loud, Pickup Man may come to your house to discuss it with you.

Personally, I looked into the dish(es) and found it wouldn't work for me. I'd have to have a lot of trees removed, $4000 worth.

Since I'd save about $12 per month over cable by going to the dish my ROI would be something like 27 years. Maybe I'll look into it if I move.

I had Direct TV for a while and switched to cable. I got tired of choppy reception during anything more than a very light rain. It's sweet when it's clear out though; but, I'll stick with cable.... so long as I'm not out in the boonies.

We had DISH for a couple of years and I loved it - never had any reception problems, even during severe weather.

My wife got a job at the local cable company and we got all the stations for free, and pay-per-view for half price. She worked there for a year or two and they got bought out, and she quit. we kept cable because I had it hooked up to multiple TVs. The picture and sound on cable sucks compared to dish, but you can flip stations w/ out waiting for the channel to be 'found'.

When we moved we kept cable. Where we moved to we got stations from Indy and Louisville - which meant I could watch the Indy 500 and Brickyard 400 on louisville stations, and watch network TV shows an hour earlier (the only thing I like about daylight savings time)

Cable got too expensive, so now we get about 3 channels w/ rabbit ears. The TV in the other room is hooked to the outside antennae and gets Louisville station ok, and kinda gets Indy stations.

I miss my DISH :-(

Based on other forums, this thread, and my own experience, I think it is a toss up. Like Norm said, they offer similar quality, performance, and price for similar options. The decision will probably come down to what type of special programming you like if any. NFL lives on DirectTv. Hockey rocks on Dish. Both offer movies galore.

I have been a DishNetwork subscriber for 3.5 years and generally satisfied. I consider cable when it goes out, but I really think quality is inferior. Also, I do nt have a good spot for my dish - large trees = teh suck.
