I personally prefer German Shephards - great dogs! Smart and easy to train, very protective.

Labs are good dogs too, though I had a friend who had one that ate half of a kitchen wall. My other friends had Weimaraner (Grey Ghost), they were great dogs too, I used to take care of them while they were out of town.

I agree about the local SPCA/Dog Shelter. Many great pets can be gotten there. I've never paid a fee for a dog except to the shelters. I like to get them young so I can train them myself.

Whatever breed you chose just be sure to get PLENTY of dog toys and chews, makes a difference. I also kept my latest in a very large airline kennel for most of the first year just during the day when we weren't home. He'd go in for abour 6 hours. He's never chewed anything up besides his own toys - and he'll rip them to shreds!

My Bubba is supposed to be half German Shephard but by the looks of him, he has mostly Rhodesian Ridgeback in him. Loving and protective - very intelligent. I wouldn't trade him for anything (even though he occassionally snores and pushes me out of bed but we're getting past that, he's trained me to stay on my side )

Go gor the lab. We have had a chocolate lab for almost 7 years and she is great. She is a British Lab and they are a little thicker with a shorter Otter tail.

This is where we got her http://users.mfi.net/~coppertonelabs/

I've owned lots of different types of dogs. I say go with the lab.
I'd also say check with your home owner's Insurance Co. first. I just saw a list that had dogs that prohibit you from getting ins. I don't think labs were on it, but I'm pretty sure the German shorthair was. Oh yeah - buy a crate! makes the housebreaking so much easier.

Hey RP, gotta go with billy on this one. I have two black lab mix pooches that I adopted, and they're unreal. I also have a five year old, and they're fantastic with him. My brother has a gold pure-bred lab that doesn't hold a candle to my guys. Both of them operate almost totally on hand signals, and learn everything I choose to teach them really quick. I'd bet that if you tally up all my vet bills to date on both of them (one's 10 years old and the others 6) I'd just now be scratching the surface on the cost of a pure-bred lab.

Here's my oldest in a pose no amount of money could beat.

Give it some thought. My personal opinion is, when you adopt a dog, everybody wins.

Good luck.

Really disapointed that more people don't know about the traits of the GSP. I had a black lab until about 3 years ago, wonderful dog. I've had a GSP for a year and a half now, love it much nore than the lab. If you're thinking house dog, it's the GSP far and above the lab.
