Go with the Lab, you won't regret it. I currently have a 16 month Chocolate Lab male. He's one of the smarter dogs I've ever had. Labs are very easy to train, and you'll have one housebroken in no time. Couple things to keep in mind, though:

The hair can suck, especially in early spring time
As others have stated, they're very energenic and need excercise
Even though they are cute, young puppies can suck:
 1. They'll want to chew everything you don't want them to. And when they do, you gotta shove something in their mouth that you do want them to chew
 2. Up until they are about 8 months or so, you're going to have to let them out and feed them in the afternoons.
All these considering, I wouldn't give my Lab up for anything. He's a great companion, very loyal, and has a wonderful personality. However, I would recommend a male

I look at it this way as far as the dog hair bunnies are concerned. If that bothers you get a reptile. You can clean everyday all day and you will still have hair. Now some breeds hair is easier to clean up. We had Samoyed's when I was growing up and their hair clumped up so you could just pick it up with your hands. Lots of short hair breeds hair is very hard to get up.

Viper,
I had a Black Lab/Chow mix and he was the best dog you could ever ask for. Unfortunately I had to put him down a few years ago. He was an awesome friend.

Yes 01, the Chessie will eat cats and anyother thing that comes on the property. It's like watching a lion go after prey on the Discovery channel.

Sorry for the hijack RP. GET THE LAB!

Go with the Labs ! Thats about all I have ever had even growing up. And if you may plan on having kids you cant do any better than a Lab. They are the best dogs I have ever seen with kids. They let kids beat, bite and kick the crap out of them and then when they get tired of it they just walk away. But now if you have problems or an intruder they will take off the legs.(intruder not the kids) Go Lab ! good luck

Since you don't want a small dog, my vote is for the lab or the golden, I don't think you can go wrong with them.

We have 3 small dogs (Bichon Frise), the reason we have this breed is because my wife is asthmatic, and this particular breed of dog doesn't have hair (they have fleece) so they never shed.

... and remember, the bigger the dog, the bigger the poo.

Good luck

You wont regret either choice, the shorthair is a great dog despite what anyone says. We have a yellow lab (Tanner) and she's the best hunting dog ive ever seen. My uncle has a shorthair and if youre looking for a dog with energy, thats the one to get.

Just my 2 cents

As far as labs go, I have a 10 year old black lab one that should've been bald years ago from all the shedding.

I have been 50 feet down in Lake Michigan scubadiving and got dog hair stuck in my throat. The hair gets into EVERYTHING. I would never get a lab again for an inside dog.

The lab only took a week or so to learn to use the backyard.

R PEE:

My personal pick would be a Golden Retriever but you cant go wrong with a lab either. They are very similar in personality and temperament. Labs will often be more high strung (read: annoying).

We have 2 Golden Retrievers, we got both of them as adults. Jake is a 6 year old male, he has a very calm, sweet temperament and he will do anything to make us happy. Very trainable...learned how to roll over in under 5 minutes...knows the difference between his right and left paws. He LOVES to play fetch and he ALWAYS has to have something in his mouth. This dog also loves to roughhouse...you can pull on his fur, grab his paws, pin him down on the ground on his back holding him by the neck and he growls and snarls like crazy but only mouths your hands and arms. You can throw him around, roll him around and he just comes back for more. But the minute you stop playing he stops and has to get a hug and a pat on the head.

Lexxi is a 3 year old female, she can be somewhat nervous and she has some serious separation anxiety issues. But she is still a great dog. Doesnt like to play like Jake does...but she does like to roughhouse with him. She does like to fetch and play tug of war though. This dog needs alot of attention and she HAS to be hugged. She will bury her head in your arms and she loves to be held tightly to feel secure. But she will leave you alone if you ask her nicely.

These are extremely intelligent dogs with a huge vocabulary and a strong willingness to please their human. They mind extremely well...they often know what they have done wrong before they are even corrected. As somebody else stated they will make you feel about an inch tall after yelling at them. But give them a treat or a pat on the head and all will be forgiven.
