You're thinking of the VW "Thing"
Honest to God, that's what the name was...
"The Thing"
Actually, it was kinda cool.

The VW 'Thing' was patterned after the VW-built WW II German staff car called the 'Kublewagen'. It was kinda like their version of the Jeep. They also made a rounder-looking amphebious version called the 'Schwimvagen'. (sp on both)
I gotta add the front of the new Ram to the fugly list. I laugh when I see them. Something about Dodge...when they bring out a new model, it makes the old ones look better. Both the Nissan Frontier and the Toyota pickups are funny-looking in my book too.

There are tons of ugly cars on the road today, I think. Aztek is probably the first one that comes to everyones mind when asked of ugly vehicles. How about the new Grand Am's and Grand Prix's? Was that an improvement?
The entire Toyota line up is pretty ugly. It seems that all their cars have huge bumpers and are tall and narrow. It's almost like their afraid of the SUV's so their bloated or something. The Tundra flairside? I can't believe people are buying these things. The flair side looks like it came off the front of '30's car.
Honda isn't exactly making much that is eye pleasing. The Element might as well be a Transformer toy. Yah, it looks like something that might have been in Toy Story the movie. How about the Civic SI. It used to be a pretty cool looking car. They had to screw that up.
Hyundai seems to be trying to make their stuff as odd and cheap looking as they were when we first started seeing them. Their not Asian looking. Not Europian looking and certianly not American looking. Maybe they'd sell in Iraq?
Even our beloved Ford makes the Focus. I would buy an SVT and supercharge it just to beat up on the "other" ricers, but the Focus is a wierd looking car. I hope the new F150 doesn't make this list but untill I see them on the road, I don't know!

I have to add the Hundai (I think) Tibouron (sp). That is one nasty-looking little sucker.
In my opinion, speaking as a designer of over 30 years, the Japanese were never good at styling cars. The first 240Z was probably one of their highlights, but even a lot of it's look was 'borrowed'. Unfortunately for the current generation, Japanese styling has become the accepted look. To me they're unexciting, and look very much alike. With the exception of the Mazda Miata, they are about as exciting as a refridgerator or a washing maching to look at. They are just not styling inovators. Even the new Z car has a lot of Audi in it.
I miss the old days when there were totally new looking models in the showrooms every fall.
Unfortunately for Detroit, the new C6 Vette was restyled by the same team that did the Aztek! The picture that I saw showed a front end that looked like a squashed Camero.
Bah...Humbug
