Question Longbed Discrimination

Anyone have any theories on this?

Ford f150 Longbed (97'-03') cost new about $200 to $250 more than an equivalent shortbed, all other things being equal.

The only difference is a larger gas tank and a larger bed.

When it comes time to trade or sell however, the shortbed has a figure of $500 to $550 more (all other things being equal)

This is a swing of $700 to $800 in favor of the shortbed.

Why would this be?

Good question. I think it has something to do with the demand of the short bed. More people are going with swb these days.

It's not how much you have but it's how you use it.

Most people buy a long bed for a work vehicle therefore tend to be a bit harder on them. People that buy short beds generally plan on being an occasional hauler or just too cheap buy the long bed. So it is assumed they are not as hard on them. Wrong assumption in my case. IMO

I'm guessing that's what it is too, 'popularity'.

Ford wants to make the most money it can. It must really bug them to have to charge more for a longbed. They couldn't sell it for less though, the media would have a field day with that one...
'Less costs more at Ford!...'

They are priced very close though.

Yep, that's another good point>
Longbed = Work
Shortbed = pampered lazy SOB.

Flareside seems to hold ok.
I put my truck into KBB with a flareside and without and the Flareside was $350 more.

The difference in price in '99 between Styleside and Flareside was $750.

Total truck depreciation = 50%
Flareside bed alone depreciation = 54%

That is interesting, the stats on it anyway. Thanks for the percentage rates, too, Raoul!

Well that tears it! I may be lazy, and an SOB, but I am in no way, shape or form pampered.

Now depends undergarments is a whole different story.

BTW, shortbed is not quite politically correct, my truck bed is horizontally and volumetrically challenged!

I was thinking.....

Could it be the pen!s envy thing? Your on the car lot looking and see the long bed. You think"Wow just think what I can do with something that big"

When you get it home you realize that having something big is very awkward. It's harder to handle and very difficult to park it in a tight spot. Taking way too long for an impatient man.

At that point you just want to get rid of it. When going for a used short bed your dealing with someone that knows you can get it in and out of a tight spot quickly. Let's face it , isn't that what most men want?

Lets face it. Our trucks just look better with short beds. Sure the 8 footer is useful, but it looks a little odd, like its in a fun house mirror. Call me a long bed bigot, but the short beds are just better looking.

Like a woman with a shaved head, she may be hot but still looks odd with no hair.

Cool

I'm with Canyonslicker, I don't do much with my truck either but when I need it for something. I do it to FULL capacity and nothing short about my truck bed.

I have no problems parking my 20 ft. bumper to bumper truck but there has been a few times where I would pass a parking space or two because of less than sufficent room for my liking. Parallel parking is a breeze, most of my friends are surprised when I parallel park it. They didn't think that I could do it so fast and easy.

Everyone asks my why I buy long bed trucks until they need it for something and it is full from top to bottom and side to side. I then turn to them and ask them if they remember when they asked me why I bought this truck. I point at the loaded box and say ... that is why.

Long live the Long Box Trucks !!!!!!!!!!!!

Have Fun & Keep on Truckin'

Well, I wasn't really trying to pit the two against each other.

It's just that you pay more for a longbed new,
then when you go to trade or sell, the bluebook says the shortbed is more valuable and that just don't sit right with me.

I have a shortbed but, this is still an injustice.

Longbed pickups look stupid. They look like their bowing in the middle. Almost like their going to break in half. I own a shortbed, but that does'nt mean I'm lazy or pampered. I pull my own weight and I know what real work is. Been there done that. So THERE. Btw, if I wanted an aircraft carrier, I would have got a long bed. Face it, the shortbed just looks better. IMO.

I drive a long bed pickup at work. You can sure put alot on them, but as for driving it around on a weekend it would be a pain. They are not as easy to change lanes and parking is a little more difficult. I think that is one reason they are worth less then short bed. The average person really doesn't have the need for one.
