Guys, this college boy needs ideas for a speech !!!!
Alright heres the deal I have a speech due soon in my public speaking class and I need a topic. It is to be 5-7 minutes long and here are the guidelines (options) for the speech to inform the audience:
A. Present a "how to" speech doing one of the following:
1. How to do somehting better or more efficiently
2. How to avoid something undesirable
3. how to overcome fear or obstacle.
4. How to achieve a difficult or elusive goal or purpose
5. How to improve something.
*All subjects must be relevant to the audience
B.Present a "speech of definition"
1) You may define concepts, ideas, movements, periods, or objects -example> impressionism, agonisticism, beauty, education, etc... we must have negation, examples, compare/contrast, etc.
C. Present an "Origins Speech" Explain how something began or originated.
1) Origin of a word
2) Origin of an idea
3) Origin of philosophy or a religion
4) Origin of a process or product.
* i was thinking of doing the origin of beer--not how to get drunk or anything but rather how and when beer originated.
*** any ideas are appreciated***

About 9 years ago when I was in college. I did a speech on "The importance of changing your car's (truck's) engine oil/filter." I put so much effort into it, I thought it was great. I used a hack saw and cut a used oil filter in half and a new one in half and brought them in for visual aids and I compared the amount of dirt and grime trapped in the filters. I rubbed my hands together to show friction - heat and then did it with hand lotion and said how the lotion it like clean motor oil. I started the speech out something like "I'm sur emost of you got here today in your car...". I put so much work into it. And in the end I got a "B" and was pissed thought I deserved an "A" for sure.
The really hot chick in the class got an "A" on hers about sky diving. She just pointed to a tv playing a video saying "This me putting on the parachute, this is me getting in the plane, this is me..."
The male proffessor had it bad for her. I complained and got nowhere, he said it was a great speech, but I went over my time by 30 seconds!!!! . I said I put "A" effort into it. He said "Effort does not always equal achievment"
Feel free to use the idea if you want, just watch your time.
Good luck!

I had to do an informative speech in speech class last quarter. At first i tried to be serious, but that don't work and no ones pays attention. So i was playing around and decided to do my speech on ten facts about viagra. Needless to say i got alot of laughs and a very good grade. Do something unexpected and funny and you will get a good grade or thrown out of class.
thats why im thinking of doing my speech on the origin Beer. Here at CMS, that seems to be a popular subject--i just have to try my best to keep serious during the speech
my planned major is business management. I dont really plan on doing a speech related to my major but its always possible.

I remember having to take that speech class back in the day. HAHAHA, sucks to be you.
I did have to do the how to speech. I did mine on how to extract a truck. But my requirements were either relavant to the audience, OR something of interest. I myself thought it sucked, but I got a A- on it since the TA liked it alot. They really liked the picture I had of a tow hook imbedded in the windshield of an 01 chevy that we came across while wheeling one time.
Usually when I needed help thinking of a topic for a speech I'd sit and watch a little TV for a while and really THINK about what was being shown. Its amazing what you can think of if you do something like that.

I've got a speech class right now as well, but I don't have to do any how to speeches. We are mainly focusing on extemporaneous speeches, and I just got done giving a speech about an hour ago.
I'd say do it on how to improve the performance of a vehicle. Just try not to say uh or um to often.

Yeah I remember doing those speeches too. I had to do a 10, 20, and 30 minute speech and I was sweating bullets all the way.
James-01L put a lot of effort into his speech and only recieved a paltry B whereas the young beauty got an A. The reason being that most people (especially a group of college kids) dont give a rats @ss about oil filters.
You have to know who your audience is!
The single most important aspect of your speech is choosing a subject that will interest and appeal to the majority of the audience. Think like a politician, you have to pander to the listeners if you want a positive feedback.
OK, i'm stepping off the soap box now.
Good luck to all.

thanks for the ideas im still considering other options

You could do a speech about greasing ***** and properly lubricated hitches for proper installation of shafts. Something like:
"I don’t so much worry about greasing my *****. I am more worried about the receiver being properly lubricated so when I install the shaft into the receiver there is no binding and more so that the shaft don’t get stuck part way into the receiver. It’s not good for either the receiver or shaft when trying to thrust the shaft into an ill properly lubricated receiver. I find older receivers may be worn where the shaft fits loosely, not good for the shaft. Usually older receivers do not have great properties for lubrication. However newer receivers not only have better lubrication properties but the shaft fits very snuggly good for both the shaft and receiver.
Moral of the story: Newer receivers are better for your shaft, always take care of your shaft."
I am sure all the shafts and hitches in the class will enjoy...

How about a speech on our Homeland Security warning system?
You know, that color coded thing.
Is it really a helpful tool?
Or is it a convienent choke collar type leash, handy for keeping the general populace in line.
"Hey, I got some questions about what's going on..."
'JERK...JERK' (Threat Color Upgraded. Commence lockdown.)
"but I still got some questions..."
This is a Government announcement.
