Civic Duty

I just got back from jury duty - they didn't want me on the panel. It was a civil case; from what we were told, 2 girls got in wreck with injuries. The defendant admitted guilt, but the plantiff (who was very cute) was sueing for additional expenses (i.e. - pain and suffering, etc...) for her and her young child. It sounded like the child had a hard time dealing w/ the accident and required therapy.

I'm guessing they booted me because I've been in a traffic accident w/ injuries, too - but the other guy didn't stop.

Anybody else have any jury duty stories?

Same type deal for me it was a civil case. The jury pool was 18 of which each side could dismiss 3. The case was a woman sueing a car repair shop. When the defendent's lawyer saw that there were only 3 men in the pool he knew the woman's lawyer would boot us and he would be facing an all woman jury, so they settled without trial.

Why is everybody down on jury duty?

I know if the tables were reversed, and I was the one accused of a crime, I would want someone who is capable of thinking for themselves on the jury, instead of a bunch of people that didn't want to be there.
It is supposed to be a jury of your peers, so why don't people want to perform their civic duty and try to make/keep our society a (more) civilized place?
Would you want a single judge deciding your fate?

Thumbs up

One of my favorite movies is "12 Angry Men", the orginal black and white with Henry Fonda and Lee J. Cobb.

I always go for a jury trial because none of them know me. I've been in front of every judge in the county like five times. The judge would have me convicted before he even heard all the evidence I could come up with.

Maybe people are down on the jury systems that pays you $37.00 per day for your services. I know alot of friends whom their employers pay their salaries during their service. All they do is sign over the court check to their employer. But for me and alot of others that are on an hourly wage, its quite a loss of income to doing your jury service.

Case in point...I was on a jury that lasted 3 1/2 weeks on land case. At the time I got $75.00 per week.

Maybe if the court system provided a fair wage more honest good people would be willing to do their "civic duty"

Try $5.00 in Broward County Florida.

I'm hourly, but my employer makes up the difference from my normal 8 hour day. I'll be getting a check for $17.50 that I'll have to sign over to my company.

One of the itemson the questionier I had to fill out was about finicial hardship that would be caused by jury duty. I would expect that if you showed that jury duty would cause a finacial hardhip, they you would be let out of it.

My last call to jury duty was for Federal Grand Jury. The first thing the judge said was, "The only people to be excused are fireman and EMT's". Go figure? I mean these people risk their lives to save others, but so do cops.

I had been out of work for three months and explained to the baliff, that I wouldn't be paid for my time. He told me ....NO EXCUSES

So into the jury pool I went. Every time a question was put forth to the pool, I answered in a matter that would make sure I was not picked. I still had to call in for a 4 month period every sunday night to see if my juror # was called for the weekly pool. So I still lost a weeks pay when I could lest afford it.

Could you imagine being on a case for a month or two, knowing you where being paid next to nothing? I couldn't.

As you say, your employer makes up the difference, so it amounts to a field trip for you and all others like you that are paid, but a financial hardship the working people who aren't paid for their time.
